June 2, 1963 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

June 2, 1963
Sunday, another lovely day,  70’s.  Girls and I went to Church and Sunday School.  LaVerne, Roberta and Renzs here toward night.  Wayne ran into the back of a truck in Grand Gorge. Broke head lights.
Comment:  Wayne was driving LaVerne's mail truck when he back ended a truck.  When Wayne was a small child, he was hitting two hammers together and a steel chip broke off and hit him in his left eye.  He was essentially blinded in one eye because of the scar tissue that developed and lost his binocular vision and hence, his depth perception.  I've often thought this was why he ran into the back of the truck.  I also remember that we was completely devastated that he had done it.  Here is a picture of Wayne probably at about the time he hurt his left eye....

You're always young in your mind it is said, No matter the face in the mirror, That you see with surprise then say to yourself, "What is that old man doing here?"
