I also always LOVED VBS.  Music, singing, games, flannel graph bible stories, other kids… J

Sunday, June 6 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Sunday, June 6 1965
Beautiful day, 75.  Sue and I went to church and Sunday School.  Gerald and Mary Ann, Sue, Clifton and I only ones here for dinner.  Wayne and Laura went to Goodyear Lake to Mary Ann's party.  Ralph Brainard and Patty called in afternoon and LaVerne and Roberta where here a while at night.  Wayne, Laura and Sue took Dougie to Kingston.
Comment:  Not sure who the "Mary Ann" is, "only" 6 for dinner...comments on previous postings:

From Sister Sue:  Hi everyone.  Mom would always cut our hair – and always cut my bangs TOOOOO short! J   When we went to California that winter, there was a bob type hairstyle that was popular their, and Carol wanted her hair cut like that and Mom cut it, and did a beautiful job on Carol’s thick hair.  So, after that, lots of the girls from school had Mom cut their hair, and Mrs. Mayo and Marlene, as mentioned in the blog, were the Pastor’s wife and daughter, at that time. Love to all -  Susan

From Charlotte Haskins:
Susan, thanks for taking the time to add your comments to your Mother's diary.   I enjoy them so much.   When Bob Mace and his wife stopped by here to visit me Bob brought up the time I cut my hair and he told me it was so funny like a Mammie Eshenhower cut.   He had a good laugh about my hair do even after all the years.   Your Mom was so amazing and can't even imagine how she ever did all the hard work in one day and cook for all of you and everybody else.   I ate there allot and it was always wonderful....I watched the Going Steady movie and enjoyed it seems to be true today.   Marsha called me a couple of weeks ago and sounded so happy she and her husband were headed to the Rocky Mountains.   Her sister in law is coming to see them in July and she wants to come to Chattanooga so I am going to meet them.   Of course, would love to see Marsha but also meet her husband he sounds perfect for her.....love, charlotte

Saturday, June 5 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Saturday, June 5 1965
Lovely day, warmer 68.  Clifton, the girls and I went to Middleburgh shopping in am. Gerald and Mary Ann came 130 pm.  They, Laura and Mary here for supper.  Carmen's came after Carol 3 pm to go to birthday party for Mary Jane at Oneonta on Sunday. Sue went to birthday day party for Robin Renz at night and Clifton and I went to Jefferson to movies 'Going Steady'.
Comment:  Busy Saturday.  Odd for Mom and Dad to go to a movie and I also do not remember a movie theater in Jefferson.  There was a movie called "Going Steady" out at the time but I suspect they went to some sort of educational movie about the perils of going steady.  Here is one from 1951.......does any of this apply now??

Thursday, June 3, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

June 3, 1965
Thursday, partly cloudy but very clear, chilly, 50's.  I cut out girl's dress half slips for wedding and got them partly done.  Mrs. Mayo and Marlene here in am.  I cut their hair.  I went down there in afternoon.  David left 4:30 am for Schenectady for Timberland.
Comment: I guess I don't remember Mom cutting women's hair...I know all of my haircuts until I was about twelve were all done by my Dad...David's got a short trip but that does not make it a good one. He is probably paid by the mile and still had to unload the damn thing....Like Johnny Cash sings, "There Ain't No Easy Runs".....

Wednesday, June 2, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

June 2, 1965
Wednesday, cloudy and rainy, 50, most rain in long time.  Finished ironing, took nearly all day.  Went to parsonage at nite to Vacation Bible School meeting.  David home for supper.
Comment:  David back from two day charcoal trip for Timberland.  Now, it's hard to imagine how much work it was for Mom to do the wash and ironing for the ten people in the family. I remember once she had to do all the washing by hand because the washing machine broke,  The washing part was relatively easy but the wringing by hand of the wash was a pretty tough job particularly the heavy denim work shirts and jeans...I remember her commenting on it....

Tuesday, June 1, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

June 1, 1965
Tuesday, partly cloudy but some warmer rain at night.  I washed, called in the news.  I did part of ironing in afternoon.  Had letter from Marilyn.  David went to Reedsville, PA for Timberland.
Comment:   Long trip for David, about 300 miles or so, probably a seven hour run if un-loaded, more if loaded....a Reedsville charcoal plant provided Timberland with private branded charcoal when Timberland ran out of capacity......Mom "called in the news" to the Middleburgh news every week.......view of the farm and mountain from a south pasture....

You're always young in your mind it is said, No matter the face in the mirror, That you see with surprise then say to yourself, "What is that old man doing here?"
