Friday, December 27 1963 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

December 27 1963
Friday, lovely day, the warmest so far, hot in the sun.  Men cleaned up some of the tumble weed and burned it.  Marilyn, kids, Wayne and the rest of us went to Julian and Inspiration Point in pm.  I did some ironing in am.  Marilyn brought over clothes to hang up.  Received New Testament from Mrs. Mayo.
Comment: Dad was a fire warden of some sort when in Gilboa so he knew how to do a controlled burn. Us kids used to help when we burned some meadows to get rid of weeds and unwanted plants. The primary control tool was small back fires started on the edges of the burn. We also had rakes, shovels and brooms to knock out any errant flames. Sounds like the family is really enjoying the leisure time. Mrs. Mayo was the parson's wife at the Flat Creek Baptist Church. Not sure of the occasions for the New Testament, Mom must have had several.......This is what Dad might have been dealing with:

Patty And Dean
Wednesday, Christmas.  Lovely warm day.  We were at Marilyn's for dinner and supper.  Took a couple short rides.  Jim, the boys, Fred, Anda and Joyce went hunting in am.  Kathy Raymond and Patty Whitcomb were at Marilyn's at night and played 42 with the boys till 3 am.  Dougie called in am from Virginia and told us the Gilboa post office had burned.
Comment: Another Christmas. I think the Gilboa post office building was the house Dad and Mom rented from Bruce Buel and at that time, had a view of the Gilboa Reservoir. LaVerne can remember living there...I believe Uncle Merel either worked at the post office when it burned or may have been the post master. Here is information about the game of "42" that we used to play a lot.....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/42_(dominoes)

Comment: Getting ready for Christmas, all seem to be enjoying the family interactions...
Here is a comment from Marna explaining who the folks were from yesterday's post:

Hi Uncle Gerry!
I want to tell you again how much fun it is to read your blog! Maybe you've heard from Mom, but I know that Rebecca and Deedee are old family friends whose last name is Apel. They had six girls, Rebecca is the oldest. In 1969, Rebecca (or Becky) came to live with us for a year. Joyce and Onda are my aunts, Jim's little sisters. Onda was on the left side of the couch with her first husband on your December 14th entry and Joyce is your unknown person a little further down. Joyce also lived with us one year in Ramona. I do not know who April is.
Merry Christmas to you all! We're vacationing in Phoenix and will go see Mom on Friday.
Love to my Superhero,

Marna

Friday December 13, 1963 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

December 13, 1963
Friday,  Beautiful warm day.  60's.  I washed,  Marilyn came over in am and left kids and took David back with her to mow lawn at new place.  She did some mowing in pm.  We went over to new place and put up draperies.
Comment:  Mom enjoying the grand kids.  Here is what Susan just wrote about the trip:  "That was a great trip.  When we went through a certain region, we would sing songs about it, us as “Red River Valley”, which was not as big as the Schoharie Creek by any means, but knew why it was called “Red River”, because of the red clay on the banks of the river; we sang “Oklahoma” when traveling through the state.  I remember stopping for a meal in Oklahoma, and how “funny they talked”.  Everyone looked at us like – “where did they come from!”.  That was the place Dad told us all, after we got our food, to hurry up and eat.  He wanted to get out of there. Seems he saw people going through a doorway with a curtain hanging up in it, and I guess the thought they may have been gambling or something in the back.  He didn’t like to looks of it.  I won’t forget that.

We, from little old Gilboa, thought we were quite the “cat’s meow”, going on a trip to California, and everyone at school thought it was pretty neat also.  Carol, Wayne and I went to school in Ramona, and I think David did as well – but can’t be sure.  David and Wayne were very popular in Ramona, and had lots of girl friends.

I remember some times walking to school with a neighbor girl, Kathy Devenburg – up over the hill past a chicken farm (big coops), and down the other side to the school.  We would stop at a soda shop or Rx for a “cherry coke” a few times.  It was a good experience all around.

Wayne had one of the lead roles in the play “Oklahoma” by the way.  There’s a picture of him somewhere.  He was more mature than the California boys, I remember.  His girlfriend was “Carolee”, David’s was “Liz”."

Love you - Susan

December 12, 1963 - Thursday, beautiful, sunny, clear day, 60's.  Marilyn, Patty, Dean, David, Clifton and I went to San Diego and Point Luma and Sunset Cliffs.  It was beautiful there.  We did a little Christmas shopping.  I bought Dean a jacket for Christmas.
Comment:  Doing the tourist thing.  Here is Marilyn commenting on Patty falling out of the car the day before this:  "Gerald, a little more on the rest of the story.
Dean, Marna, Patty Harris
Amazing , that was the days before seat belts. We had an old green Plymouth station wagon and the right door on the passengers side would fly open when you made a left turn.  Patti was in the front seat and out she went. Thankfully we were not going very fast.  She would have been 5 years old.  God in His mercy protected us so many times, when thing could have been really bad.LU "M"

Wednesday, December 11, 1963 The Freances Hubbard Diaries

December 11, 1963
Wednesday partly cloudy.  I wrote to LaVerne, Gerald and Mother.  Marilyn and the kids came over in am.  Patty fell out of the car on way here and got banged up.  They were all here for dinner.  Wayne didn't go to school because of sore throat.
Comment:  Wow, calamities, Dean cuts his lip badly then Patty falls out of the car.  Here is what Marilyn wrote about Dean's cut lip:
"Just a Little note about the accident with Dean. Wayne and I took him to the doctor for the stitches and Wayne almost passed out, he had to lay down on the floor. The cut on the lip was really quite bad and sewing up a lip is tough. Wayne was really a tender-hearted guy. I miss him. LU "M"   Here is a picture of Wayne when he was close to that age in California.....pretty cool looking guy.....

In 1958 Marna, Marilyn's oldest daughter, was thrown out of a car with me when she was about seven months old...seems to run in the family.....take a listen:

Sunday, December 8, 1963, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

December 8, 1963
Sunday, partly cloudy in am.  Left Lordsburg N.M. 5:20 am.  Ate breakfast in Wilcox, Arizona. A man from Vermont ran the place.  Elevation 4458 ft to 4900 ft; then we started down to Tucson; beautiful, giant rocks and mountains.  Tucson 8:30; saw first palm trees west of Tucson, cultivated and acres of cotton.  Casa Grande, elevation 1400 ft; stopped for gas and checked tires and got two new ones.  Left there 10:55, Wellton, AZ 2:25. Climbed over mountains and down to Yuma and reached there 1:45 Mountain time.  Turned clocks back 1 hr over California border, rode though miles of mountains of sand dunes as far as eye could see and down in a valley.  Elevation 3890.  Reached Marilyn's 5:30 pm.
Comment:  Five days of hard traveling and they made it.....Here is the type of car they drove and here is what David had to say about their last night in Gilboa, NY:

"It was a 1964 Plymouth ,   I remember the day before we left, we had a snow storm. Wayne and I went to Grand Gorge to fill my car up with gas because it would be sitting for the winter. Coming back home, the roads were slippery and drifted. Instead of going through Flat Creek we went to Manorkill with the thought there might less drifts . We were doing fine until we hit the cross road, the drifts there were about 3ft high.  We hit them at about 60mph and the car lifted up to ride over them and then came to a stop, stuck. We walked home to get the Farmall tractor and of course, we had to jump it to get it started then went to pull out the car and put it in the garage. Once we opened the hood, the snow was packed to the top. You could see the imprint of the hood in the snow. I then closed the the hood and got ready to go to Laverne’s to spent the night and leave for California the first thing in the morning." Bet they are enjoying the California weather.....

December 7, 1963
Saturday, left McLean, Texas 6:10 am, in Amarillo 7:20, drove in a dust storm.  Ate breakfast and had car washed.  It was daylight and foggy in New Mexico, 10 am, set time back to 9 am.  Drove in sand storm to Roswell, left there 11:30.  Beautiful there, desert mountains, Ruidoso Downs, beautiful there, up in the mountains with tall evergreens and patches of snow.  Alamogordo nice and white sands.  Reached Los Cruces 4 pm got groceries and crossed Rio Grande River.  Stayed in Lordsburg New Mexico 17 miles from Arizona.
Comment:  Again, a 600 mile day, no problem except for dust and sand storms, must have been a new experience for them,  probably David and Wayne doing most of the driving......

December 6, 1963
Friday, nice day, sunny.  Left Sullivan 5:10 am.  Came through the Ozarks, ate breakfast 7:30 at a nice place.  The Ozark roads good but a lot of corners coming up from the mountains.  Ran off the road in Baxter, Kansas 9:40 am, and missed our turn.  In Oklahoma at 10 am and took Will Rogers Turnpike.  Called Marilyn about 10:30 am.  Tulsa at noon.  Oklahoma City 2:30, warm here, leaves on trees.  Stayed at McClean, Texas overnight.
Comment:  About 620 miles, they are certainly moving fast.  This is what David says about running off the road:    "We went on to the shoulder of the road that dipped down a little . The one wheel trailer we were pulling had a tendency  to pull on the back of the car when the car was not level . Therefore we skidded across the road a bit and regained control (@ 65 mph scary)  then went on our way."  David John Hubbard

December 4, 1963
Wednesday, cold, 10 at LaVerne's.  We left for Calif. 6:20 am.  Went to Oneonta and to Utica, roads miserable with snow and ice.  Got on the Thruway at Utica 9:20 am, road good, becoming sunny.  Road wet with some snow west of Syracuse becoming sunny until 20 miles from Penn. line then some snow again.  Reached Ohio line 2:50 pm.  Had to detour above Akron and got mixed up.  Reached Lodi around 6 and stayed all night.
Comment:  About 500 miles or so in some tough driving.  They must have driven by the Madison, OH Exit 212 on their way into Cleveland then south to Akron and Lodi.  Sixteen years later , Mary Ann I would live there for thirty five years and raise our kids, and where they also would visit numerous times.

You're always young in your mind it is said, No matter the face in the mirror, That you see with surprise then say to yourself, "What is that old man doing here?"
