Wednesday, September 30, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

September 30, 1964
Wednesday, cloudy, clearing in pm, 57 high.  I washed and put 10 quarts of tomatoes in freezer.  Dad called at noon.  Saw Earl go by with a trailer pulled by another car.  Doug called at night, just got in from the Mediterranean.  Sue got potatoes from Halls.
Comment: Sue got some potatoes from Otis and Myrtie Hall who live just up the road from us...they probably had more than they could use....they were brother and sister...

Tuesday, September 29, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaires

September 29, 1964
Tuesday, cloudy, and light rain.  50 high.  I ironed, finished relish, made a cake and went to farewell party for Mrs. Seabury with Madelyn in afternoon.  Winnie called in am.  Louise was here a few minutes around 5:30 pm.

Monday, September 28, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaires

September 28, 1964
Monday, cool,50's, cloudy in pm.  I made chili sauce, plum jelly and started relish.  Did some ironing and wrote to Marilyn.  Vern Russell broke into Russell VanAken's and took gun and shells.
Comment: Russelll VanAken lived about a 1.5 miles from us and made his living on junk auto and equipment parts and fire wood. He lived like a hermit in a one-room shack that he built himself and ate mostly Wheaties for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He very rarely wore a shirt even in the winter and we would often see him tan and lean working around his extensive junkyard or his home-made buzz saw powered by a pulley and belt off the rear, tireless rim of a jacked up derelict car.

From Susan About Grandpa's Death:  This is very much worth a response.  I loved Grandpa.  He would drop by the house often.  He always had a soft smile across his closed lips.  He was quiet, and gentle, and never in a hurry.  He was straight, and lean, and for the most part health.  I remember the wedding of Louise and Grandpa.  He was very happy with her.  He built the house that they lived in.  And, he loved his grandchildren!

September 25, 1964
Friday, cloudy, cooler, 40's, little rain in pm.  Sue stayed home with sore throat.  Ina Belle, Evelyn here for dinner.  We went over to Earl and Lillian's a few minutes.
Comment: Family recovering from Grandpa's demise....here is Ina Belle and Evelyn in younger days. Ina Belle and Evelyn were born about a year apart in in 1915 and 1916 respectively so this picture was probably taken in the mid thirties, beautiful girls....this was taken on the front steps of Elmer's homestead. Grandma Aggie fell and broke her hip on these steps in 1946 and died a while later in the home.....

Monday, September 21, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

September 21, 1964
Monday, beautiful day. Trees are beautiful.  I did a big wash in am.  Went over to Louise's.  Dr. Lyons was there 4 pm.  Dolores called and said Grandpa had gone, he said he was dizzy.  I went over after I called Lorraine and Earl, and stayed till 7 pm.  Winnie, Beth, Lorraine and Howard came over for a bite to eat before they started home.  I called Clifton, Marilyn, LaVerne, Wayne stayed home from school
Comment: May 18, 1882 to September 21 1964, 82 years old.....a life that seems to have been well lived. Large family, mostly loving, respected by the community, sold Hubbard Hill to my father for $1.00, developed mechanical and electrical devices for the farm, always a hard worker. I remember him opposite me on an old Case baler on a very hot summer day. I was pushing the wires through separating the bales and he was tying them together on the other side. We both were sweating profusely and both were covered in hay seed and dust...he must have been in his mid seventies at the time....here are he and I when I was about fourteen and he about 70...

A famous novel and movie were based on events in Eagles Bay......
The novel was "An American Tragedy" by Theodore Dreiser and the movie based on the book was "A Place In The Sun" with Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor.....

Comment: Starting my last semester at SUNY@Albany..keeping water to the house was a never-ending battle. Either the pump did not work and the lines froze, broke, or leaked profusely. The women probably had a fun time at the laundromat and dinner.....here is a montage of Mom and various kids and folks......

Friday, September 11, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

September 11, 1964
Friday, much cooler in pm, 60.  Beautiful warm day, 80, windy rain in the night.  I washed before kids left for school.  Made canned peaches.  Clifton called in the afternoon from Old Forge.  I wrote to Marilyn.  Danny Tait came about heater.  I took girls to parsonage at night and stayed down.
Comment: Thirty-six years later on the same day, I'll get hit by a car on my bike and spend 21 days in the hospital. I was still in rehab during the 9/11 attack 37 years later riding a stationary bike at the Madison YMCA and saw the event on television from start to finish. Strangely enough, my rehab nurse was driving by the Y, heard about the attack on the radio and was scared, came into the Y for comfort. She saw me and we watched the events together......and 53 years later I will spend about 36 hours in agony suffering from a severely impacted bowel because the hospital staff did not check for it when I was released from a CABG3 operation after using narcotic pain relievers for the previous 5 days. I still call September 11, my lucky day.
