Rainy, 34 to 39.  Clifton and I went to Windham in am, stopped at Betty's a minute, Tom is in Canada.  I washed in pm.  I had a letter from Marilyn.
Comment:  Wonder if Tom was skiing in Canada.....he was one of the good guys...here is his Obituary.....unfortunately, it does not convey his kindness and respect he showed to some of his less fortunate cousins....never knew he was born in Ohio, I did not know his sisters, I do remember his father. Tom died about six years younger than I am now which is certainly a cause for reflection....

Sunday, 25 February, 1962, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Ten to 35 degrees, sunny beautiful day.  We went to church and Sunday School. LaVerne and Roberta were here for dinner and supper.  Girls went to BYF in afternoon.
Comment:  Family Sunday...two years later Cassius Clay would knock out Sonny Liston in on of the greatest boxing upsets in boxing history...and the meme "Float Like A Butterfly, Sting Like A Bee" was born....."On February 25, 1964, 22-year-old Cassius Clay shocks the odds-makers by dethroning world heavyweight boxing champ Sonny Liston in a seventh-round technical knockout. The dreaded Liston, who had twice demolished former champ Floyd Patterson in one round, was an 8-to-1 favorite. However, Clay predicted victory, boasting that he would "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" and knock out Liston in the eighth round. The fleet-footed and loquacious youngster needed less time to make good on his claim--Liston, complaining of an injured shoulder, failed to answer the seventh-round bell. A few moments later, a new heavyweight champion was proclaimed."

Partly cloudy, light snow, 18.  I washed.  Clifton and I went to Dick Mattice's funeral at Middleburgh.  the girls stayed at Bitle's.  Clifton and boys cut logs in am.  Ethridge got a load of hay in pm.  The girls and I went to a prayer meeting at Keepers.
Comment:  Dad must be bartering with Ethridge Goodfellow, we give him hay, he hauls the logs for us......Dad had his own trucking business in the early thirties.  Ethyl Haskin's diary has many entries of  Leonard and Almon Haskins working for him.  The business came to a sad end when one of his drivers ditched a truck with a load of cement and was killed.  I recount this in "Me, LaVerne & Franklin Brown:  take a listen:  http://hubbardfamilymusic.blogspot.com/2011/06/me-laverne-franklin-brown-talking-blues.html

Snow flurries and windy, about 18.  John Glenn went into orbit three times around the earth.  We went to Cobleskill in pm.  Got Carol shoes and Susan sneakers.
Comment:  The orbits must have been a shock to Mom's belief system.  I distinctly remember arguing with her about us going to the moon and she absolutely believed it was not God's will that we do so....

Sunny, zero to thirty.  Sue home with a cold.  I washed.  Clifton skidded logs with the big tractor.  Had a sick headache all day.  Had letter from Marilyn.
Comment:  The big tractor was a tricycle Farmall H with 600 lbs of  calcium liquid in each rear tire for traction and and it really was quite a rig.  In fifth gear it went about 20 or so mph and very maneuverable.  I almost tipped it over trying to herd cows with it.  I put it up on one rear wheel and it seemed like forever before it righted itself...another lucky break.....

Cloudy, 18 degrees.  I wrote to Doug, washed, Clifton went to Middleburgh after part for chain saw.  We went to ball game at night.  Gerald came home.  Snow in pm at night.
Comment:  Our equipment broke down a lot it seems and as kids and teenagers, the breakdown was a welcome break from the work and sometime involved a trip after parts to Middleburgh or Cobleskill or even Schenectady or Albany.  I remember vying for the chance to take a cool ride in the summer or a warm one
in the winter.  Ahhh, the small pleasures.....

Thursday, 8 February, 1962, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Partly cloudy, 5 to 25 degrees.  Wayne was home with headache.  Clifton cut logs.  I went to Fultonham with Madalyn to accessory lessons.  Paul Ellis stopped in pm.  I worked on my dress.
Comment:  The lessons must have been about her sewing machine....Paul was our cousin, son of Clarence and Madalene Hubbard Ellis and at one time worked the Elmer Hubbard farm for awhile.  Dad was violating all sorts of safety philosophies by cutting logs alone in the woods.  There's a whole bunch of stuff that can happen cutting logs and most of it is bad.....of course, we never had any safety helmets or other gear...I still have some faint scars on my leg where I grazed myself with a chainsaw....lucky again....

Five degrees, windy, partly cloudy, light snow flurries.  Carol still home.  We went to Mother's for dinner.  Clifton and boys went to LaVerne's at night for tools.
Comment:  Uh oh, something's broke......just read an article about how farmers are struggling with the newer farm equipment because they can no longer fix the equipment with baling twine and duct tape because of the sophisticated electronics it all has now...causing many problems, and there is a big market  for used equipment that is not so electronically based....here is a Facebook page on the subject:

Comment:  Hmmm..amazing, I did not go out on a Saturday night, might have been broke but that usually didn't matter.....In yesterdays post, I mentioned the property of Jabez and Anna Maria Brandow Hubbard.  I've located a map of the property....see lower right of picture #12, J Hubbard.....this also show the old town of Gilboa before the dam....

Zero to 23, partly cloudy.  I washed.  Clifton went to Windham again.  We went to ballgame at school.  LaVerne and Roberta went with us.  Carol went home with Jill Hughes after school.  Bus had troubles, Gerald picked them up on Haskin Hill.
Comments:  Must be losing it, I have no memory of picking them up......Just found an a reference to Jabez Hubbard, my Great Great Grandfather in an issue of the Gilboa Monitor, January 8, 1880.  It's a little hard to read...it's a mortgage foreclosure in favor of Maria Hubbard who's property is next to that of Jabez Hubbard....now I wonder where that was.....btw, Maria Hubbard was Jabez's wife, her full maiden name was Ann Maria Brandow.....

You're always young in your mind it is said, No matter the face in the mirror, That you see with surprise then say to yourself, "What is that old man doing here?"
