Thursday, 30 June, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Hot, sunny, 80.  Girls and I went to VBS and to Oneonta in pm.  I went to prayer meeting at night. Had letter from Marilyn and she had had a miscarriage June 21st but was feeling much better.
Comment:  Did not see that coming, don't remember ever hearing about it...our week at Pine Lake continues...I remember gorgeous weather and lots of guests and lots of tanning that I'm paying for now.....from left, Margie's friend Fran,  Margie, Mary Ann's sister, back of brother David's head, (he is playing guitar) George Hallenbeck, Mary Ann's father...

Wednesday, 29 June, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Hot, sunny, humid.  Girls and I went to VBS.  Mary O'Hara and Debbie here when we got home and Carol went to Prattsville for afternoon with them.
Comment:  I think Debbie is a Carmen or Wyckoff girl but not sure...Mary is Betty Hubbard's daughter and Carol's second cousin...another session at Pine Lake, ..not sure who the skinny guy at left is, Dick Aguilera, Mike Verde, Dad, Big John Verde and little John Verde...I think that's my Ford Falcon over Dick's right shoulder....

Tuesday, 28 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Tuesday, 28 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Hot, eighties, clear.  Sue and I went to VBS.  David and Mary went to Pine Lake.  Sue went to Sunday School picnic at Leonard Reynolds at night.  Stewart Mace was here in the afternoon.  I voted in the primary at night.  Clifton worked with the bulldozer.  I picked berries for short cake.
Comment: I think Stewart is doing the hay.  I can almost taste that wild strawberry short cake that Mom used to make...here is us partying at Pine Lake.  We may have drank a little beer then....Mary Ann, Mary Briggs, Mary Hallenbeck, Anella Aguilera hoisting a few...

Monday, 27 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Hot and humid 82.  Girls and I went to VBS.  Anita and family here in afternoon.  I cut ??? Donna's hair.  We went to Grand Gorge and to Wayne's at night.  Clifton and David cultivated the garden.
Comment:  And Mary Ann and I are still enjoying the great weather at our rented cabin at Pine Lake. Here is Dick and Anella Aguilera, (childhood friends of Mary Ann.  Dick lived on the same street, Division, as Mary Ann.), and brother David picking some tunes.  Dick was and still is a very accomplished guitar player and he often goes to Nashville to play with the "pit" or "session" players there..he has an extensive collection of Les Paul  and other guitars...

Sunday 26 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Sunday 26 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Hot and humid, 80's.  The girls and I went to church and Sunday School then we went to Pine Lake where Gerald and Mary Ann were vacationing. Doug got dinner here for Earl and David.  Liz Merwins's son killed about this time one day before he was to graduate.
Comment:  Another tragedy...Mary Ann and I rented a cabin at Pine Lake in the Adirondacks a few miles from Gloversville and spent a week I think.  We had lots of visitors.....Me, Mary Ann and Mary Briggs at Pine Lake in 1966...great party, my start on pre-cancerous lesions due to sun exposure

Saturday, 25 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Saturday, 25 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Hot and humid, 84 some wind, very hot.  Clifton worked with dozer all day.  Boys helped some.
Comment:  Dad is cutting a road to the Rother property part of which we used to call "the new seeding"....30 acres that Dad sold for $3000 when money was tight.  I remember Dad or someone saying how amazed Rother was when he walked the property with Dad, how much 30 acres really was.  Dad probably could have sold him ten acres for the same price had he known....Dad, not with a dozer but with a grader....

Friday, 24 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Friday, 24 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
80, Sunny and humid.  I washed in am and Sue and I went to Stamford shopping. Got the manifold for the car and Doug went to LaVerne's to put it in.  Sue went too. Carol came home with them. Clifton and Doug went to Keith's at night and got a bulldozer.  LaVerne's here in the evening.
Comment:  Finally figured out that "Keith" was Keith Buel, who's father was the landlord of Dad and Mom's first house just  across from the reservoir.  This was the Gilboa Post office in later  years and of which, our Uncle Merel Hubbard was the postmaster.  Keith's  father was Bruce Buel.  He made a living as a Watkins salesperson traveling door to door to sell Watkins products; health remedies, baking products and other household items.  I remember he had a black 1934 Dodge with a Watkins decal on the doors....I remember Mom using the salves on us when we were sick....

Went to Missionary Meeting in pm a Bible Camp and helped clean.  Sue went too.  Carol still at Roberta's.  I went to prayer meeting at night. Wednesday, 22 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Wednesday, 22 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Lovely, clear , sunny day, 70's.  I picked strawberries, the first, finished ironing. Wayne, Laura and the baby came about two and stayed for supper, they went to Earl's and got a pup.
Comment:  The strawberries must have been wild in the lot just behind the house and very small and very sweet.  Seems like all the strawberries now are as big as eggs and certainly do not have the taste of the wild ones....a new baby and a new pup, I guess they'll be occupied...probably some sort of hunting dog, a Beagle, perhaps.  Uncle Earl always had several dogs hanging around, from large 'coon to small rabbit hounds.....must have been a hot day, me about 1941 or two.....I still vividly remember this....

Lovely day, 70's.  I washed and went to Lavilla's about 11 am to work on Vacation Bible School material.  We went to Wayne's and Laverne's at night a minute.  Clifton went over to see Kath about bulldozer but he wasn't home.  Sue went to a picnic with class to Nickerson's.
Comment:  Not sure who Kath is, I think Dad wants a bulldozer to make a road for the Rother who bought some land........Hardscrabble days....me about 8 or so..

Saturday, 18 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Saturday, 18 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Some cloudiness but clear, 70.  I baked, David helped Gerald fix his car at Tom's.  Had letter and picture from Marilyn.
Comment:   On the trip in from Niagara Falls, my 1962 Ford Falcon started losing power until it barely ran.  I took it over to Tom O'Hara's in Prattsville and he diagnosed it as severely burnt valves and offered to coach me while I tore it apart, removed the valves, got them ground and replaced them.  It took all afternoon and David was there in his car to drive to the valve grinding place and return.  Tom did not charge me anything for the use of his garage or tools.....here are some other memories of Tom and a picture of him on Hubbard Hill about mid ninties or so...can you name the other folks??

Thursday, 16 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Rainy day, cool, 50's.  I painted stairs  and hall door, finished ironing, did some cleaning, wrote to Marilyn.  Our pictures came that I sent in Monday.  I went to prayer meeting at night.

Comment:  Pretty busy day, sure is amazing how picture taking has changed in the past 48 years...Mom was always into photography and I remember a quite expensive Kodak camera that she had for years.....this is pretty much it...with all the young kids playing with it, it seemed to last for a long time....

Wednesday, June 15 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Wednesday, June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Nice day, cool, 60's.  I took Rambler to Grand Gorge for tires.  Went up to Wayne's, they came over for dinner and supper.  Wayne shampooed my rug in front room.
Comment:  At the time, Wayne was working for Sears as a carpet salesman so probably had some expertise for the task...somehow when I think of this,  I'm reminded of one of his regrets that he talked about when I saw him for the last time in northern Virginia as he was dying: He said "I wished I'd gone to college"....and he was certainly smart enough to do it....Wayne as a toddler in the front porch of the Gilboa house about 1948 or so....Dad was the Gilboa
Highway Superintendent at the time...

Lovely day, 75.  I washed and sewed.  Had letter from Marilyn.  Called Mother.  Went to church to Vacation Bible School meeting with Madalyn, finished putting in potatoes.
Comment:  Tough to beat a sunny, 75 degree day on the hill in late spring, great views of clouds, mountains and flowers.  Pinksters probably coming out on the mountains...jet trails in the sky....looking east from the Hubbard homestead....across the "spring lot"...here is my song about the "Spring Lot" performed by son David...

Cold and cloudy in am, 40-63, becoming partly sunny. David met Doug 12 midnight at Kingston. Doug and Carol went to Middleburg and bought a record player.  We went to LaVerne's for a few minutes then on to Stamford and picked up Sue.
Comment:  The family gathers for the weekend, this is probably what the record player looked like...now I have thousands of songs on the web and my mp3 players instantly available.....

Tuesday, 7 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Mostly sunny, showers at night.  I set out tomato and cabbage plants and papered my room.  We were at LaVerne's at night and went to Stamford at night for forms for Rambler.  They went with us.
Comment:  I think it's interesting how much interaction there is in the family.  Hardly a day goes by without some member of the family calling or visiting another....three, four times a week at LaVerne's or Wayne's.  Doug coming home most weekends, Carol and Sue going somewhere with Mom, David around......here are all the kids in 1978..tough looking crew....
LaVerne, Marilyn, Doug, Wayne, Carol, Sue, David, Gerald

Warmer and nice.  I sewed all day again, made myself a dress.  Carol and I went to church at night and heard Paul Gibson.
Comment:  No info on the web about Paul Gibson that makes any sense.  Mom really gets into the sewing....here is the sewing room after Mom moved out.....

Thursday, 2 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Thursday, 2 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Sunny and clear, 30's in am, becoming warmer.  I finished Sue and Caro's suits.  Went to Grand Gorge at night to store and stopped at LaVerne's a few minutes.
Comments:  Wonder what the suits are for?.....Sue, Carol and David, early sixties...Craig's daughter Elise looks a lot like Susan...looks like a bleak day on the hill.  Picture is looking east to Otis and Myrie Hall's place.

Wednesday, 1 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Wednesday, 1 June 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Partly cloudy, 50's high.  I sewed nearly all day.  Cut out Carol's suit and worked on it and my yellow dress. David stayed in Oneonta.  I went to prayer meeting at night. Wrote to Marilyn and H. Jeagers. Received invitation from Marsha's wedding and Margaret's graduation.
Comment:   Marsha is Marsha Vaughn, daughter of Lorraine and Howard Vaughn.  Margaret is Mary Ann's sister.  Howard and Lorraine:

You're always young in your mind it is said, No matter the face in the mirror, That you see with surprise then say to yourself, "What is that old man doing here?"
