Thursday, 24 November, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Thanksgiving Day.  Cloudy but warm, 52.  Just David, Doug, girls, Clifton and I here. Wayne's here in evening.  Doug ran off the road near LaVerne's and LaVerne brought him home.  Jammed car roof. Doug and David went on Hall's Mountain toward night hunting.  Doug was nearly shot.  We called Marilyn in pm.
Comment:  A dangerous day for Doug....one of many on the Hill as the guns, farm animals and farm equipment occasioned many close calls.  I almost shot Doug with a 12 gauge.  We used to cut the slug out of a  shotgun shell and shoot just the wadding, kinda like a big blank shot.  So I had the idea that if  I just rolled the slug back down the barrel and then fired it, the slug would just roll out the end of the barrel.  I almost had Doug stand in front of it to test it when I changed my mind and aimed the gun at a round cast iron support post in the barn and pulled the trigger.  Of course, the slug came out full velocity and made a large and permanent dent in the pole, much to my horror at the time.....I was about twelve and Doug about eight years old......that post became a marveling focal point for me whenever I worked in or visited the barn in later years...here is what Doug said about the incidents through Michael: "I asked about the car and he said it just slid off the road, down the bank, onto some trees which damaged the roof.  He went to LaV’s, called home and Wyckoff’s got it out.  As for almost being shot, he and Uncle David were walking along and heard a gun shot and a slug bullet went between them.  He said he could actually see the bullet and it sounded like a bee….bzzzz".  27821

Comment:  All getting ready for Thanksgiving day weekend.  School and Navy out early.....this old cupboard sat in the Hubbard House cellarway for many years...I still don't remember what was inside it...From Sister Sue: "That was Grandma Anna Christianna’s Jelly Cupboard – which John Hubbard has now. Mom kept canned pickles, and jelly and jams in it, and other canned things."Susan

1966 Women's Voters Guide
The U.S. Senate election, 1966 was an election on November 8, 1966 for the United States Senate which occurred midway through the second and first full term of President Lyndon Johnson. With divisions in the Democratic base over the Vietnam War, and with the traditional mid-term advantage of the party not holding the presidency, the Republicans took three Democratic seats. Despite Republican gains, the balance remained overwhelmingly in favor of the Democrats, who retained a 64-36 majority.

Saturday, 5 November, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Cloudy, 30's.  Doug and girls left for Albany and didn't get back 'til 5 pm, got blanket and tape for heater.  Clifton and I went to Grand Gorge after file and feed and worked on cold air ducts.  Took Sue to parsonage for Halloween party and Carol to Linda's for birthday party and picked them up.  Don Armlin shot and killed while hunting coon at night.
Comment:  Work on the heater never stopping..Don Armlin was one of the "Armlin Boys" generally known for being bad asses and mountain men living up in the Middleburgh hills. He married Delores Ferris, youngest daughter of Claude and Louis Ferris who lived at "Ferris Camp" or, later, the Baptist Bible Camp.  Louise later became my step-grandmother after marrying my Granddad Elmer Hubbard.  Claude ran a hunting camp and beer joint where in 1948, I watched the second Joe Lewis, Billy Conn fight on a 12 inch black and white tv with a large magnifying glass in front of it.  Claude and Louise had previously lost a two year old boy when he drowned in the swimming pool Claude had for his guests.  After that incident, he drained the pool and it was never used again.  Don was killed after he climbed a tree along the Ferris Camp road and tried to shake a coon out of the tree.  One of his friends thought he would help him and tried to shoot the coon with a .22 but hit Don in the chest and killed him.  The meme "He can run but he can't hide" was voiced by Joe Louis after he was asked about Conn's exceptional foot and hand speed.  Take a look:

Comment:  That's about 4 man-days work on the heater.....don't remember LaVerne's new car.....get together at Clifford And Evelyn Taylor's house on Rt 145 in Franklinton showing some of our cars:  From left, LaVerne, Rudy, Glenn Taylor, Clifton J, Gerald E,  James Barry, Doug, Wayne...Uncle Earl's Mercury is first car or right and my Olds 98 Convertible the third from right...about 1960, the year I got out of the army....Sad to say that five of the party are now deceased:  Uncle Rudy, Glenn, Dad & Wayne, James Barry.

Nice warm day, 50's but windy. Louvilla went to Grand Gorge with me in am after pig feed. We called on Ann Lewis. I did some sewing in afternoon.
Comment: This is what pig feed looks like up close: I don't recall us kids eating the pig feed like we did the dairy ration....maybe because of the look...
