Saturday, February 29, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaires

February 29, 1964
Saturday, still cloudy, rainy 50's, clearing in afternoon.  Clifton had cold in his head.  Girls went down street in afternoon.  Marilyn, Jim and kids here for supper.  Marilyn had to work from 10 pm to 6 am.   Had a letter from Roberta saying Angie Briggs died Friday night.
Uncle Merel's And Aunt Ella's, Flat Creek, NY 2011
Comment:  Marilyn working the graveyard shift, and it was a Leap Year in 1964, how convenient....Angie Briggs was Aunt Ella's mother and so it was a sad time for her I'm sure.  Here is LaVerne's comment:  "Angie Briggs was Ella's' mother, father Will. Ever
hear the expression "Daddy Will?"...and I do remember Daddy Will, but vaguely.  Our
generation was not that close to the Briggs side of Aunt Ella's family.  Here is Uncle Merel's and Aunt Ella's place as it was last September....

February 28, 1964
Friday, fair in am, 70's cloudy in pm.  I washed and cleaned the house.  Marilyn, Dean and Patty here for dinner.  Had a letter from Roberta saying Angie Briggs died Friday night.  Rykers here for supper.  Rained hard most all night.
Highway 78, Ramona Ca, In The Rain
Comment: Not sure who Angie Briggs is, probably relative of Aunt Ella who's maiden name was Briggs....

Thursday, February 27, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaires

February 27, 1964 Thursday, nice day 60's.  Marilyn and Dean here in am.  I hemmed some dresses.  Clifton and I went to Escondido in pm.  We all went to hear Bev Shea at Russ Auditorium at San Diego, Wayne, Marilyn and Liz Walter went with us,  stopped at Poway Bowl for cokes on the way home
Comment: They seem to go to Escondido a lot...wonder if this is where they stopped for Cokes...and George Beverly Shea, at 102, was honored at the Grammies in 2011, so he must have been a pretty big deal back then.....

Wednesday, February 26, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaires

February 26, 1964
Wednesday, bright, sunny day, 72 high.  I cleaned the house and finished mending.  David went to Escondido in am.  Wrote to Doug and Mother.
Comment: And last night, on the 25th, Cassius Clay surprised the world by knocking out Sonny Liston in 7 rounds.."On February 25, 1964, 22-year-old Cassius Clay shocks the odds-makers by dethroning world heavyweight boxing champ Sonny Liston in a seventh-round technical knockout. The dreaded Liston, who had twice demolished former champ Floyd Patterson in one round, was an 8-to-1 favorite. However, Clay predicted victory, boasting that he would "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" and knock out Liston in the eighth round. The fleet-footed and loquacious youngster needed less time to make good on his claim--Liston, complaining of an injured shoulder, failed to answer the seventh-round bell. A few moments later, a new heavyweight champion was proclaimed."  See.....http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/clay-knocks-out-liston

I remember the fight well and thought Cassius would be annihilated. After the fight, I went back and read all the articles preceding the fight to see why I and  everyone else was so wrong.  All of the articles emphasized how big and bad Sonny Liston was but none of them pointed out that Clay was taller than Liston and also had about and inch or so of "reach".  He also weighed about the same and was much faster.  So, duped again by the fourth estate as we often were and still are....And Ali goes on to become one of the best known and admired people in the world....at 8-1 odds. Nobody ever knows anything....

Tuesday, February 25, 1964 The Frances Hubbard diaries

February 25, 1964
Tuesday, cloudy. cool. little warmer at night.  I ironed, were at Marilyn's for lunch.  The girls, Clifton and a I called on Rikens at night.  Played Rook.  Did some mending.  Received 1st issue of Escondido paper.
Comment: Interesting that they were playing Rook, a card game without "cards" so it did not violate fundamentalist belief that cards were the devil's tool: From the Internet: "It is likely that Rook cards were introduced for the benefit of members of fundamentalist protestant religions, such as the Mennonites, who considered (and in some cases still consider) playing cards to be the "devil's tool". They were forbidden to play cards; but Parker Brothers filled the void with a game that was played like cards but did not use the standard playing card deck. There are people who refuse to play any cards with a standard deck but who will happily play Rook all night every weekend. There is a close parallel here with Kvitlech cards, which were playing  playing cards bearing numbers, made for use by Central European Jews who were also forbidden by their religion to use standard cards."
http://www.pagat.com/kt5/rook.html

We had regular cards around the house so do not think Mom thought they were evil.  I remember playing Canasta for hours with Marilyn and other kids...Interesting also, to me at least, that the Rook sure looks a lot more evil than the picture or number cards in a regular deck.....

Monday, February 24, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaires

February 24, 1964
Monday, sunny 70's, becoming partly cloudy in late afternoon.  I did a big wash.  Went to Marilyn's in am a few minutes.  David had a cold in his head.  Carol had a package from the 8th grade at Gilboa.  Box of chocolate and bracelet.  Marilyn and kids here a few minutes at night.
Comment: Nice that Carol's classmates sent her a package.

Here is the complete Wickipedia article on the Gilboa School: The Gilboa-Conesville Central School District is a small, rural school located in the Northern Catskill Mountains. There are about 375 students in grades K12 housed in one building in Gilboa, Schoharie County New York.
There are no villages nor towns within the school district. The town
of Prattsville has the only village atmosphere in the district. Because no students live within walking distance of the school, almost all take the school bus to school.

Here is a picture of the school and why the school motto is "Best School By A Dam Site".  When the school was built in 1927, it had a view of the reservoir.  Here is the Wiki article about the dam:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schoharie_Reservoir

Sunday, February 23, 1964
Lovely day, 60's.  Went to church and Sunday school and Marilyn's for dinner.  We walked over to Mt. in front of Jim's after dinner, beautiful view of Ramona and surrounding territory.  Went for ride with Jim's to Randall's nursery on a plateau then down to San Diego river bed and back to Pine Hills and Julian.  About 20 miles of narrow curved dirt roads down to river bed from about 3000' elevation to sea level and back to 3000'.  Marilyn, Jim, and the kids here for supper.  Had a letter from Dougie.
Comment:  Sounds like a nice Sunday with family and touring.  Here is a picture of what they might have seen.

February 22, 1964
Saturday, lovely day, warmer, upper 70's, door open all day.  Went down after mail in am.  Cleaned up the house. Took ride in pm.
Comment:  "Door open all day" sure says a lot about the ambiance....very pleasant, can hear the sounds from outside, kids, birds,  probably pleasant breezes through the house,  .....In Midlothian, Scotland there is even a "Doors Open Day" which allows visitors to visit historic manors and farms in the beautiful Scottish countryside:  Take a look....

Friday, front door open all day.  Beautiful day, still windy 70's.  I washed and kept the kids in the pm when Marilyn went to Escondido with Anita to see Pastor South.  Carol and Sue went to ball game.  Jim's, Dad and I went to Ronnie and Anita's in evening.  Wrote to Doug in pm, had letters from Louise and Evelyn Bailey.  Martha Thorington died and Angie Briggs.
Comment: Long entry, deaths, letters, visits, chores, activities And 22 years prior, at about this time in February, a sad stain on our history was occurring......

February 19, 1942 - Internment of Japanese Americans began after President Franklin Roosevelt issued an Executive Order requiring those living on the Pacific coast to report for relocation. Over 110,000 persons therefore shut down their businesses, sold off their property, quit school and moved inland to the relocation centers.   Japanese were not the only ones, our Italians in the US were also interned to to various degrees....

February 20, 1964
Thursday, bright, beautiful, clean, and gale winds.  I finished the aqua dress and wrote to Mother in am.
Comment:  Not sure who the aqua dress is for, must have been pretty dusty with the winds.....here is a picture of a dust storm near Beaumont, Ca where Marilyn currently lives, and a link to a website about Southern California dust storms and how they are caused by Santa Ana winds and us.    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Ana_winds

Monday, February 17, 1964. The Frances Hubbard Diaries

February 17, 1964.
Monday beautiful warm day 70's.  I washed in am and baked pumpkin pie.  Did some sewing.  Went to Marilyn's WMU at night.  Jean Romans mission to Okinawa had the program.  10 below in Oneonta, NY.
Comment:  Quite busy, bet the pie was great, I can almost taste it now..I spent 18 months on Okinawa in 1958 and 1959...about 300 natives a year were getting killed in the mountains picking up brass from the still-live munitions from all the shelling during our attack on the island.  People were also living and dying in the streets.  I saw several corpses. The Okinawans hated out guts...now it's  a major tourist attraction....and they still hate our guts.....http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/15/world/asia/okinawan-views-on-us-military-presence-are-nuanced.html

Friday, February 14, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

February 14, 1964
Friday, nice, sunny day, but cool.  I washed in am wrote to Doug, Mother, LaVerne and Gerald.  Marilyn and I went to rummage sale in pm.  Carol stayed with Marilyn overnight.  Received a package of letters from Roberta.
Comment:  Roberta must be collecting their mail  and forwarding it....I wish the family would have saved some of those letters.  I think they would have made for some very interesting reading with much richer detail as to what was going on at the time...Mom's diaries are great but, a bit terse.....no mention of Valentine's Day....

Thursday, February 13, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

February 13, 1964
Thursday, fair in am, becoming cloudy toward night.  We went to Marilyn's in am, she didn't feel good.  She, Anita, Grandma and I went for coffee in am, home 11 am.  We want to Marilyn's for dinner and she and girls and I went to Escondido in pm.  Bought Sue a yellow blouse for 69 cents and David had 2 new tires put on car.

Comment:  Again, a quite active day, they probably wore out the rear tires on the car because of the extra weight of the trailer and luggage....wonder if this is the coffee shop they went to.....seems like a pretty popular place, take a look:  Marilyn just commented that it was the Ramona Cafe where she worked and where they had coffee.  Here is their Facebook Page:  http://www.facebook.com/RamonaCafe

Wednesday, February 12, 1964

February 12, 1964
Wednesday, beautiful day.  No school, all of us but Jim and Wayne went to Balboa Park.  Went to Fine Arts building for Japanese exhibit, History Of Man then to Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, home 5:30 pm.  Went to prayer meeting.
Comment:  And this is one scene they saw at Balboa Park..amazingly beautiful...
Balboa Park is a 1,200-acre (490 ha) urban cultural park in San DiegoCalifornia. The park is named after the Spanish maritime explorerVasco Núñez de Balboa. It was the location of the 1915 Panama–California Exposition and 1935 California Pacific International Expositionwhich each created architectural landmarks for the park.
The park's site was placed in reserve in 1835, and so is one of the oldest sites in the United States dedicated to public recreational use. In addition to open space areas, natural vegetation green belts, gardens and walking paths, it contains a variety of cultural attractions including many museums, several theaters, and the world famous San Diego Zoo. There are also many recreational facilities and several gift shops and restaurants.
Balboa Park, and the historic Exposition buildings, were declared a National Historic Landmark and National Historic Landmark District in 1977, and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.[1][2] Balboa Park is managed and maintained by the stewardship of the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of San Diego.

Tuesday, February 11, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

February 11, 1964 Tuesday, lovely day, 70's. I did some ironing in pm.  Clifton, David and I were at San Diego in am when we stopped for a red light.  David looked at car to our right and saw Ella Mae VanValkenburg Hinkley. We stopped and talked and exchanged addresses.  We went to Marilyn's at night.  Ronnie and Anita were there, played rook.
Comment:  Six degrees of separation applies again....not sure who the people were but it must have been quite a coincidence...here is a web article that kinda explains the six-degree concept.

Monday, February 10, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

February 10, 1964
Monday, beautiful, warm day, 80'.  Sue home with cramps in stomach.  Clifton and David went to Poway in morning.  I washed.  The Rikards rode up with us to Julian in afternoon.
Comment:  Not sure if David and Dad are working in Poway, maybe they are just showing up at a union hall or job site...Julian was an old gold rush town, then, famous for apples...wonder if Mom made a pie from the Julian apples....

The town was named by Drue Bailey after his cousin Mike Julian, who later was elected San Diego County Assessor.[5]
The area was seasonally occupied by the Kumeyaay people, and in 1845 was part of the Rancho Cuyamaca Mexican land grant.
After the American Civil War, Julian experienced a gold rush. In 1869, A.E. "Fred" Coleman, a former slave, was crossing over what is now known as Coleman Creek, just west of Julian. Seeing a glint of gold in the stream bed, he climbed down from his horse to investigate. Having had previous experience in the gold fields, he retrieved his frying pan and began panning the sands of the creek. Learning of the find, others tried to trace the gold to its source. On February 22, 1870, the first "lode", or hard rock, mining claim was filed in the Julian area. Since February 22 was President George Washington's birthday, the mine was named the Washington mine. Soon hundreds of anxious men and families were rushing to Julian to stake their claims. Julian became a tent city overnight. In April 1870, the area's first saw mill was set up and Julian began to take on a more permanent structure.
While the miners were trying to wrestle the gold from deep within the earth, James Madison brought a wagon load of young apple trees up into the mountains. The fruit trees flourished in the clear, fresh air. Apples are still a big product in Julian, many of which are used for making the world famous Julian apple pies.

Friday, February 7, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

February 7, 1964
Friday, nice day, still windy.  Held? got income tax ready and mailed in.  Clifton and David went to Poway in pm.  I washed, Dean here.  Marilyn here in pm a few minutes.  Carol went to ball game with McWhortons.  Wayne went back to school.
Comment:  I think Dad and David went to Poway to see about a job.  We always seemed to get a pretty good income tax refund because the farm, barely, if ever, broke even.  I remember it was always welcome.  I never remember the family being flush with an excess of cash....

Wednesday, February 5, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

February 5, 1964
Wednesday, beautiful sunny day, 70's.  I made rolls.  Kathy Goodman was here with a  4 year old and Ricky Barken, a 6 yrs old, in pm.  I took them home 5:45 pm.  Comment: The family certainly seems to have melded into the community.  Mom's rolls were to die for, fresh out of the oven, loaded with melted butter.   ....this is how I remember the rolls looking.  After they baked, mom would spread butter on the tops when they were still hot....

Monday, February 3, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaires

February 3, 1964
Monday, lovely day.  I washed, took Sue to dentist after school but didn't have anything done.  David had his teeth cleaned.  I drove Marilyn's car to dentist and was there until 5 pm.  Comment:  And the number 1 song on this day was, "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and the first time I heard this song, I thought how raucous it sounded....and how different it was from the fifties rock n roll.....what is it about humans..we always think the music of our generation was wonderful and all succeeding music is drivel....Elvis and early rock were my thing, my father and mother thought Nelson Eddy was great.  Ella Mae took Mom to New York city to see Al Jolson, she did not like him......

Sunday, February 2, 1964 The France Hubbard Diaries

February 2, 1964
Sunday, beautiful day, 79.  We went to Sunday School then Jim's and us went to the desert, Salton Sea, Palm Springs and home about 7:30.  Palm Springs a beautiful place but very hot in summer.  Very windy at night.  We ate picnic dinner in the desert and the wind started to blow and it was quite a sand storm.  Salton Sea very rough.  Had letter from Roberta saying LaVerne's throat was bothering him again.
Comment:  Pleasant Sunday in a place far different than where they were all brought up....

Saturday, February 1, 1964 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

February 1, 1964
Saturday, beautiful day, 82 high.  Carol went to youth rally and gone all day.  I made a cake for it.  We were at Marilyn's in afternoon.  Boys and Jim worked on their lawn.  Marilyn, Sue, Clifton and I went and heard Maria play.  Marilyn and I cleaned the church, we were there for supper.  Ronnie and Anita came.  The horse jumped the fence when the boys and Jim tried to catch him.
Comment:  It's always something with animals, if they are not shitting on you, stepping on you, biting you, hooking or kicking you, they are getting out, usually at the worst possible time.....
You're always young in your mind it is said, No matter the face in the mirror, That you see with surprise then say to yourself, "What is that old man doing here?"
