Partly cloudy, very windy and snow flurries from the west, about 20 degrees.
Gerald and Mary Ann came to Gloversville but didn't come here because Sue had measles and mumps.
Comment:  Probably a good move on our part, mumps in an adult male can cause sterility...hmmmm no kids....that would have certainly made a different life for us....David, Craig Mary Ann, 1971 or so....

Mostly sunny in the teens.  Light snow at night, one inch.  I washed, etc.  Sue had three-day measles.  Wayne's came for supper, had to have new starter put on his car. Carol went to Debbie's at night.
Comment:  Three day measles is also called German measles and Rubella, often mild....It's always something with their cars......"washed, etc", wonder what the etc means.....building the garage, early fifties.....from left, Wayne, Doug, Gerald, LaVerne, forefront, a 1951 Ford....I still remember that day as being quite cold......

Saturday, 24 December, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Saturday, 24 December 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Cloudy, cold, 10-15 degrees.  Heavy snow starting about 2 pm.  Laverne's and Wayne's came for Christmas dinner at 7pm and had gifts after.  They left at 10pm as the snowplow came or they would never have gotten home.
Comment:  And the Christmas blizzard strikes....Garrison Keillor even wrote a book about one.....http://www.garrisonkeillor.com/a-christmas-blizzard/
A Christmas Blizzard is the story of James Sparrow who dreads the holiday and the poignant memories it dredges up and who longs to spend December in Hawaii. But his wife adores Christmas and cannot bear to miss it. A phone call from cousin Liz in James’s hometown of Looseleaf, N.D. — his uncle Earl is dying — brings James out of the doldrums and he flies to Looseleaf just in time to be snowed in by a major blizzard. There is a ghost, a wise man of San Francisco, a genial uncle, an undercover FBI agent, a steamy sauna scene, and the singing of Christmas carols. And several feet of snow.”
— Garrison Keillor

Marilyn called at night.
Comment:  A busy Christmas Eve Eve....From Google Search:  Urban Dictionary
 Christmas Eve Eve
The day before Christmas Eve. All "Eve" holidays are better than the actual holiday because the day does not have to live up to the expectation of the real holiday. People are also usually off work on "eve's" so it is like everyone's Friday night!!!  Happy Christmas Eve Eve!! Let's get Hammered!!!   ....and we probably did.....

Cloudy, snow, 20's, about 5 to 6 inches of snow.  My head felt miserable.  I fixed 8 of soap.  Wrote more Christmas cards, Called Mother.
Comment:  Sounds like a tough day...more on hero Jim Harris....from Marna:  "Here is a picture of  my dad's silver and cedar "Hero Box" that he received after helping to rescue the Wally York family. They had a set of twins that were my age. He carried one of them out on his shoulders. The inside inscription of the box reads "Presented to Jim Harris December 5, 1966 In recognition of your heroism in coming to the aid of a fellow employee CALIFORNIA LIQUID GAS CORPORATION"
I was always so proud of him for this act! Now I realize it was very risky and probably foolish of them to do it! I am the kid that got to keep the box after my Dad died"

Tuesday, 12 December, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Cloudy, cold, I washed in am, hemmed Linda K's dress and cut out and started Sue's aqua dress.  Wrote to Marily and sent some Christmas cards.  Started to snow about 8 pm.
Comment:  Talked to Marilyn about Kern flood in the 11 December post.  They lived in the Lake Isabella area at that time.  The Kern River drains into that lake.  They were stranded about 4 days during that time with three kids, Marna, Patty and Dean.  Jim and a co-worker became local heroes when they rescued a family from the flood, wading through waist deep water to get to them and get them out.  Jim received some kind of award for heroism....Marilyn said was a rather close call.....Knowing Jim, you would not be surprised if he did something like that...Jim Harris as a Marine.....

Partly cloudy, 50's.  I sent Marilyn's package and wrote to her.  Went to Evelyn Bailey's to Missionary Meeting, nice time.  David was home in evening a few minutes, got some of his clothes.
Comment:  David must me staying somewhere close to his new job at Albany Felt...here is  probably more than you want to know about the company but still some interesting history of the area.....

The banks of the Hudson River north and south of Albany, as well as the Mohawk and other nearby rivers, were dotted with paper mills in the 1890s. Practically all of the paper manufactured in the U.S. was made within a few hundred miles of Albany, and the forests of the Adirondacks resounded with the echoes of the woodsman's axe and falling timber. It is no wonder that there grew up in the Albany area an industry to supply the burgeoning paper industry.

In 1895, three Albany businessmen with capital of $40,000 formed the Albany Felt Company to manufacture papermaker's felts. In 1902, the Company moved to the site that would be its principal home until 2011 - the plant on Broadway which is on the boundary line between the City of Albany and the Village of Menands.

Snow flurries nearly all day, 25.  I finished banking house in am, finished ironing and some sewing, shortened Carol's coat etc.  We went to LaVerne's at night for John's second birthday.
Comment:  "Banking" the house meant that she probably put hay bales along the foundation to keep the cold air from going underneath the house.  Hay bales were normally used but I remember Wild Bill Schermerhorn once piled cow manure and barn bedding about three feet deep all around his house on Bull Hill...I remember Dad commenting on it...he thought it was nuts because of the smell...Happy Birthday John LaVerne Hubbard....."he's much younger than that now".........

Thursday, 24 November, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Thanksgiving Day.  Cloudy but warm, 52.  Just David, Doug, girls, Clifton and I here. Wayne's here in evening.  Doug ran off the road near LaVerne's and LaVerne brought him home.  Jammed car roof. Doug and David went on Hall's Mountain toward night hunting.  Doug was nearly shot.  We called Marilyn in pm.
Comment:  A dangerous day for Doug....one of many on the Hill as the guns, farm animals and farm equipment occasioned many close calls.  I almost shot Doug with a 12 gauge.  We used to cut the slug out of a  shotgun shell and shoot just the wadding, kinda like a big blank shot.  So I had the idea that if  I just rolled the slug back down the barrel and then fired it, the slug would just roll out the end of the barrel.  I almost had Doug stand in front of it to test it when I changed my mind and aimed the gun at a round cast iron support post in the barn and pulled the trigger.  Of course, the slug came out full velocity and made a large and permanent dent in the pole, much to my horror at the time.....I was about twelve and Doug about eight years old......that post became a marveling focal point for me whenever I worked in or visited the barn in later years...here is what Doug said about the incidents through Michael: "I asked about the car and he said it just slid off the road, down the bank, onto some trees which damaged the roof.  He went to LaV’s, called home and Wyckoff’s got it out.  As for almost being shot, he and Uncle David were walking along and heard a gun shot and a slug bullet went between them.  He said he could actually see the bullet and it sounded like a bee….bzzzz".  27821

Comment:  All getting ready for Thanksgiving day weekend.  School and Navy out early.....this old cupboard sat in the Hubbard House cellarway for many years...I still don't remember what was inside it...From Sister Sue: "That was Grandma Anna Christianna’s Jelly Cupboard – which John Hubbard has now. Mom kept canned pickles, and jelly and jams in it, and other canned things."Susan
