Comment:  A little mountain idiom going on here "Nice lot out to church"...Schoharie County sunset from Chad Blaksley.....I remember many evenings like this....

Saturday, October 30, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Saturday, October 30, 1965
Partly cloudy 50's.  David worked till noon.  Gerald, Mary Ann, Clifton and Wayne went to Central Bridge and brought Wayne's car to Cobleskill.  Clifton, the girls and I went to Mother's at night and came home by Stamford and Grand Gorge,  We stopped at LaVerne's for a moment.  Linda came after Doug and they went to Albany.
Comment:  Linda may be a new girl entering the picture...I don't remember her....so... Cobleskill was settled in 1752 and Portland, OR was incorporated in 1851 or about 100 years later...about the same amount of time that our mother would have lived if she had survived to 100...looking back at the last 100 years, it's absolutely amazing what has happened in that span of time..probably folks in 1851 looking back 100 years would also have been astounded....

Comment:  Busy Friday.  Mary Ann and I probably drove in from Niagara Falls where we were living and working at the time.  It was about a 4.5 hour drive.......here is a picture of our family visiting our mother in California.  We were playing at the nursing home where she was staying...

Monday, October 25, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Monday, October 25, 1965
Partly cloudy, cool, 42.  Wayne is so lame and sore and could only walk with a chair.  Franklin Clapper here in am about accident insurance.  I did ironing, wrote letters and did some cleaning.
Comment:  Only if you have been in a car wreck can you understand how just about every muscle in your body gets wrenched and will be sore for days.  I've been in several and the day after felt like I was beaten with a baseball bat....Wayne's depth perception was hampered by a scar over his left pupil that he got when a steel chip flew into his eye as he was hitting two hammers together and I'm wondering if that had part in the accident...here he is in happier times....

Sunday, October 24, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Sunday, October 24, 1965
Cool and partly cloudy.  Girls and I went to church and Sunday School and to Cairo and Windham Mountain in pm.  Wayne and Laura left here 4 pm for Central Bridge.  We had phone call from Bush road to come at once and they had had a wreck, we went to Cobleskill hospital and they came home with us after being examined.  Roberta came after keys at 1030 pm.
Comment:  So Wayne and Laura were apparently heading for Central Bridge to do something related to LaVerne's mail routes and they wrecked their car on the Bush Road on the way to Middleburgh...kinda weird, I do not remember this at all.....

Friday, October 22, 1965, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Comment:  Sure gets to be tough for older people....My grandmother Agnes, fell on icy steps in the winter of 1945, broke her hip and it led to her death in 1946, age 67....she was a beautiful young woman.

Wednesday, October 20, 1965

Tuesday, October 19, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Tuesday, October 19, 1965
Beautiful Indian Summer day, 75.  I cut out dress for myself in am and went to Home Bureau with Madalyn to Mrs. Ely's in pm.  Girls and I went to Jefferson after pig at night, stopped at Roberta's a minute.  Both men worked late.
Comment: "An Indian summer is a heat wave that occurs in the autumn. It refers to a period of above-normal temperatures, accompanied by dry and hazy conditions, usually after there has been a killing frost. Depending on latitude and elevation, it can occur in the Northern Hemisphere between late September and mid November, though the term is used as widely as early September through January"....Wikipedia...
And Indian Summer in the Catskills sure was beautiful.  Indian summer days also coincided with small game hunting season and I remember many blissful days squirrel hunting in the Beech wood stand of Uncle Earl's adjacent to the property Doug now lives on....Indian Summer Day....from Shannon O'Hara....

Monday, October 18, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Monday, October 18, 1965
Beautiful day, sunny, warm, 67 no wind.  Sue home, didn't feel good.  I washed, covered three windows with plastic, cracked nuts, picked up a few, all there was (from the butternut tree at the bottom of the hill). Had letter from Gerald and Mary Ann.  David started work for Carpenters at Gilboa.
Comment:  Butternuts were tough to crack.  I watched my Dad set them vertically on the bottom of an old flat iron and hit the tip with a hammer and it would split down the middle and the nut meats could be easily picked out.  A very smooth and yep, buttery taste..

Friday, October 15, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Friday, October 15, 1965
Warm, 60, cloudy and windy.  I washed but clothes didn't dry very good.  David went to Poughkeepsie looking for work.  Girls and I went to church at night and finished decorating for Anita's shower.
Comment:  I used to deliver milk from Prospect Dairies in Stamford to Poughkeepsie and Peekskill driving a reefer semi down along the Hudson River on Routes 9 and 9W.  Got $20 per day for about 10 hours of work and had to handle every damned ounce of that milk...but, that was pretty good money back then....here is my son David singing my song about those times....The air brake diaphragms I blew were on the same hill the limo recently ran down and killed twenty people....

Sunday, October 3, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Sunday, October 3, 1965
Partly sunny, cool.  Girls and I went to church and Sunday school and Wayne and Laura went to Haskin reunion at Potter's Hollow.  Kids sang.  No church at night.  Mr. Mayo sick.  Girls went with Wayne and Laura to take Doug back.
Comment:  We were related to the Haskins through my father's mother who was Agnes Haskin, a much beloved member of the Flat Creek community...here she is with her mother, Sara "Tay" and sister Phebe....she died when I was about 8 years old.  I was taken to her deathbed so we could say goodbye.  I vividly remember she was taking massive, heaving breaths that shook the bed as her heart failed and she looked at me with loving, anguished eyes....she died just a little bit later.....she used to buy me new shoes whenever the ones I had became bedraggled....I remember several pairs....
