Saturday, 30 April, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Cloudy, 50's, rain in afternoon.  Clifton had to work.  I made dining room curtains, Carol did some cleaning.  Mary Ann C. and Mother came after her at 5 pm and they went to Middleburgh at night.  Many here for supper.
Comment:  Not sure who Mary Ann C is...."Many" did not include Wayne and Laura because they are visiting us in Niagara Falls...and here they are on a windy day with Mary Ann...

Friday, 29 April, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Sunny, warmer, 50's.  Girls and I went to Cobleskill shopping and to Mother's for dinner.  LaVerne, Roberta and John here in evening.  Wayne and Laura went to Niagara Falls.
Comment:  Lots of family contact.  Wayne and Laura of course are visiting me and Mary Ann at the Peter Pan Apartments at the foot of the North Grand Island Bridge. They would get off on Niagara Falls Boulevard.  We got lots of visitors while we lived in the Falls, and became pretty good tour guides for the sights and sounds of the area.  It always struck me how cheaply commercialized the US side was compared to the Canadian side......

Freezing, rainy and cold, 24.  I fixed two skirts for Sue.  Carol at Wayne's.  Laura brought her home about 5 pm.  Sue and I went to prayer meeting at Evelyn's at night.
Comment:  Cold in a hurry....Carol on the lawn with Prince, the dog that fell off the tower, his left leg is sticking out because it is stiff from the hip down.  If that ain't country.....

Wednesday, 27 April 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Cloudy, cold, 32.  I ironed and papered stairway in am.  Carol vacuumed and cleaned. The girls and I went to Roberta's and Laura's in the afternoon and got quite a few groceries.  Sue and I took Carol over to Wayne's at night.
Comment:  No mention that today is Dad's birthday, born April 27, 1908, and died January 4, 1984, at the age of 76.  He would have been 58 years old on this date.  Here is a picture of him at about that time.  I think the Sue is holding Wayne's first daughter Michelle, and believe that's John, LaVerne's oldest is in front of Mom.  Bessie is partially hidden to the right.  Here is my tribute to him in bad poetry and rather sketchy guitar playing....take a listen.

Tuesday, 26 April 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Partly cloudy and cool.  I did some ironing in pm and finished half in am.  Clifton and some other men went to Ilion at night to see a man in the hospital.
Comment:  Not sure who the man was.  Ilion was the original name for the ancient city of Troy.  The founder of Remington Arms, Eliphalet Remington was born in Ilion, NY.  Remington makes the 2nd most popular firearm in the world, the Remington 870 Wingmaster pump action shotgun.  They also developed or adopted more cartridges than any company in the world, are the oldest company in the US that still makes its original product and is the oldest continuing manufacturer in North America.  They are also moving some operations to Alabama and reducing the Ilion workforces because of the SAFE act recently passed in New York....betcha that's more than you ever wanted to know about Ilion, NY....I think Uncle Earl had one and I know other relatives did also...

Monday, 25 April, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Cloudy in early am becoming sunny, 50's and windy.  I did big wash.  No school, spring vacation.  Sue at Wayne's, Carol about sick with a cold.  Meteorite seen from Washington to Montreal.
Comment:  The meteor of that date was big deal and it looks like it went right over the Hubbard Hill area. "April 25, 1966: This brilliant exploding meteor passed northward over New Jersey and eastern New York into Canada along a flat trajectory. Observations were analyzed by both U.S. and Canadian experts, who determined that the end point of the meteor's visible path was at an altitude of around 9 miles (15 kilometers) near Huntingdon, Quebec. Canadian astronomers B.A. McIntosh and J.A.V. Douglas noted, "The anticlimax of so spectacular an event is surely the failure to recover meteorites ... Much of the possible fall area is either sparsely populated or unfavorable terrain for recovery." They suggest that part of the meteoritic mass may have come down in the rugged Adirondack Mountains, along the trajectory but before the end point.  "

Saturday 23 April, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Lovely sunny day, 60's. Rained at night.  Doug and Dad cleaned wood house and around outside.  Clifton got hit in the eye with a wire.  We took him to Dr. Tepfer and he sent him to a specialist in Hudson, Dr. Little.  Carol went out at night.  Clifton went to funeral with Bob.  Sue and I went to party for Mayo's at church hall.
Comment:  Not sure who Bob is, maybe Bob Renz, LaVerne's father-in-law.  There was always lots of tangled baling and barbed wire and pieces of cable laying around that was a pain in the ass to keep cleaned up....

Saturday, 16 April, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Saturday, 16 April 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Mostly Cloudy, 50.  Wayne and Laura here in afternoon and Michelle too and stayed for supper. Took a pie and went to call on Phyllis at night, her folks were there.  Glenna (?) Swella sick with pneumonia and in Kingston Hospital.
Comment:  Glenna is a friend from church....Here is a memory of Dad from an article in the Gilboa Historical Society, I think by Art Van Acken when he was driving a truck for Dad....Here is Dad with his grader.....

Clifton Hubbard was superintendent of highways and helping to rebuild the
surface of the ball field at the Gilboa-Conesville Central School.

My job was to bring gravel from a bank near South Gilboa to the ball field, and Clifton would level it off with the town grader.
I had taken the muffler off the truck and used just a straight pipe—I enjoyed the rumble, but even I’ll admit it was loud.

On this one trip, heavily loaded with gravel and roaring along, I found my
brakes had gone straight to the floor. No brakes in a heavily loaded truck com-
ing into the village of Grand Gorge! By downshifting, I was able to make it
through Grand Gorge, then left and over the hill to Gilboa and the dam. I made
it to the school, unloaded the truck, and immediately worked on the brakes.
I am sure that making the trip down the hill north of Grand Gorge without
a muffler and with no brakes must’ve sounded like German dive bombers.

never told Clifton I had lost the brakes, and he probably thought I was just
showing off ! He was a man who seldom lost his cool.

As a senior who was there said, “Safety back then was something to be dealt
with each day. I think these reflect that period.”

Beautiful, sunny day, some clouds, fifty.  Warmest of the spring.  I ironed until my head started to ache.  David took down snow fence and cleaned up behind the house.
Comment:  We always put up a short stretch of wooden snow fence just west of the front lawn to prevent the snow from drifting over the walk way...sometimes it didn't work that well.....our dog Prince, the first winter after he fell off the tower and broke his left hip.  You can see he's kinda gimpy.....

You're always young in your mind it is said, No matter the face in the mirror, That you see with surprise then say to yourself, "What is that old man doing here?"
