Saturday, July 31, 1965
Nice day.  I baked, Gerald and Mary Ann came for dinner.  Carol went to stay with John in am when Clifton took Wayne's car after new tires
and have it serviced.  Roberta and Wayne here for supper.
Comment:  Michael Hubbard has sent me some pix of his family tree starting with his Great Great Great Grandfather Jabez Hubbard born in Green County in 1814.  I cannot find out who his parents were.  There seems to be no definitive record of his parents.  If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know.

Sunday, July 25, 1965
Still hot and humid.  Girls and I went to church in am and at night.  Gerald, Maryann, LaVerne and Roberta here for dinner.  Church full.  Seventy one at Sunday School.
Comment:  I did not realize there were 71 kids in the area....and in other news, on this day at the Newport Jazz Festival, Bob Dylan went electric, was booed, and for about a year and a half on his tours through Europe and the US, he was booed at every performance but he kept on keeping on...also, in 1950 on this day, Lefty Frizzell recorded his "If You've Got The Money, Honey, I've Got The Time" and set the stage for the moves and vocalizations of Elvis....take a look...also does Saginaw Michigan.

Hot and humid.  Went to Mary Ann's shower at Gloversville.  Left 11 am, home 10 pm.
Comment:  Not much to say about the shower.  It was held at the "Turkey Farm" just outside of Gloversville which has been closed for awhile....this is us at about that time on the front porch of the Hallenbeck's house in Gloversville, 25 Division Street...

Nice day, did some ironing, made curtain for shower.  Sue went to swim lessons.
Comment:  Quiet day...Hubbard Hill House 2013 from Michael..I remember when Dad planted that Maple tree.  He would get a tree that was growing on or amid rocks and poor ground.  He said that would be a tough tree that could be transplanted and thrive...  I think he was right.....Here is a song I wrote about it;

Lovely day, 70.  Took Becky home after Dinner and Sue and I went on to Cobleskill shopping.  Went up to Mother's for a few minutes.  I got cloth for a white and blue dot dress.  Clifton, Sue and I went to LaVerne's at nite.  No one home.  Hallecks finished haying.  David had to go to National Guard at nite.  Wayne home and stayed overnite.
Comment:  Here is Mom's mother, Bessie Van Tassell while she lived on the hill with Mom and Dad probably in her mid-eighties.  Bessie was 73 in 1965 and would live 24 more years and die at 97 in 1989.  She was eleven  years younger than I am now...amazing.....

Cooler but sunny.  Girls and I went to church and Sunday School. Wayne and  Laura here for dinner.  They and girls went to horse show at Oak Hill in pm.  We went to church at nite. Got pigs in the yard.
Comment:  Oak Hill was just a few miles away down Potter Hollow Road and across Route 145...nothing cuter than a bunch of baby pigs.....

Saturday July 17, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Saturday July 17, 1965
Hot and humid with thunder showers in the pm and at nite.  Clifton, girls and I went to Nickerson's for the girls to sing.  Stopped at LaVerne's and brought John home with us while Roberta went to Albany with LaVerne.  Wayne came home too.  David went to Doc Tepfer for sore throat.  Clifton built yard for pigs.
Comment:  Didn't say much about the singing....The pig yard probably looked a lot like the tin roofing enclosure in this picture on the left.  This is Dad working on the 1936 Packard we had.  He was probably changing head or oil pan gaskets and maybe doing a ring job.  We always had oil burning problems with that car.

Doc Tepfer was  the go-to Doc on the hill.  He had an office in Grand Gorge which was quite convenient...I mention him in "The Ballad Of  Patty Russell".....take a listen to a childhood tragedy.....click the link below...

Friday, July 16, 1965, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Friday, July 16, 1965
Beautiful day, 70's.  Sue went to swim lessons. I washed in am and made Carol a navy top for her white skirt and hemmed up both skirts.  Took girls to practice with Dowitch. Carlton and Eddie started haying.
Comment:  Carlton is Carlton Halleck, Flora Del Hubbard's Uncle.  He ran a large farm close to the Flat Creek Baptist Church in Flat Creek.  I think Eddie is his son....Dowitch was the music teacher at Gilboa School.  Carlton would have probably had the latest hay equipment and I think, a New Holland Baler like this with a bale kicker:

Thursday, July 15, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Thursday, July 15, 1965
Beautiful clear day, 70's.  Sue went to swim lessons for the first time.  Took her to the corner to meet the bus.  Carol and I went to Ella's after a cake cover and plate when we went after Sue.  I did some sewing.  Had long letter from Marilyn.
Comment:  The "corner" was  where Blakesley road met Hubbard Road and where the Gonzlicks lived.  When LaVerne was sixteen or so he and Herman Huber had a head-on collision at the corner with a stake body pickup and Herman's car. .  No one was hurt.  I think LaVerne was a fault  but Herman wanted nothing except to get his car fixed.  Herman's wife initially said she hurt her back but Herman talked to her awhile and it went away.....Herman was a butcher in Germany and he helped us butcher some cows and pigs occasionally...view from the second floor of the Hubbard House.....

Hot, humid, showers in PM and at night.  Girls and I went to Gloversville.  Never saw a hotter day to drive. Sue Stryker went with us.  Home 730 pm.  Drove all way home in rain.
Comment:  Probably went to Mary Ann's parents for something about our (Mary Ann and I)  wedding coming up in about 5 weeks....

Tuesday, July 13, 1965, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Tuesday, July 13, 1965
Beautiful day, 80.  I ironed, took girls to swim at West Conesville but wound up at Roberta's.  Wrote to Dougie.  We went to Grand Gorge at nite after feed and stopped at LaVerne's again.  Sorted out clothes and sweaters and took 2 boxes to Madalyn's. Burton Scutt and Max Decker here at nite to ask girls to sing Saturday at Nickersons's for Jolly Boys and a picnic at Roxbury.  Billie called in am
Comment:  Madalyn is Madalyn Blakesly of Lyle and Madalyn who lived about a mile away on Blakesly Road.  Their nephew, Rudy, married my dad's sister, Winifred.  The girls seem to be getting a tad famous for their singing.  When I was a boy, Nickerson's Rocks overlooking the Schoharie Creek in Gilboa off Stryker road, was where many of us risked our lives jumping and diving from the 30 feet or so high rocks into the Creek.
This was way before the campground was developed.  Arvilla and Ford Nickerson founded the campground.  Arvilla was my 2nd grad teacher and Ford invented a hydraulic gutter cleaner that I believe he sold to Jamesway Farm Equipment Company....

Monday, July 12, 1965
Lovely day, clear.  I washed in am.  Girls mowed the lawn.  I finished girl's long half slips.  Called on Myrtie a few minutes.
Comment:  Ote and Myrtie Hall, our nearest neighbors.....brother and sister.."but I 'd always thought them married when I'd see them on the road in that pretty two-doored Chevy with their monthly grocery load".Take a listen....

Sunday, July 11, 1965
Nice day, Girls and I went to Church and Sunday School.  Sue and I went at nite. Heltsley and Steadmans there.  We went to Albany in pm and Wayne found a room to stay part of the time.
Comment:  Wayne must be working for LaVerne on the mail routes and probably starts in Albany very early in the morning.  Not sure who the people she mentions are.....here is a picture of the Empire State Plaza in Albany started in 1965 and must have provided a lot of work for the construction trades at the time......

Saturday, July 10, 1965, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Saturday, July 10, 1965
Cloudy in am, becoming fair in pm.  Clifton went to work, he rode with Alton.  Sue was at Deanna's.  Carol and I went to Middleburgh in am after clothes at the cleaners.  Clifton, the girls and I went to church at night to the Tony Fontane Story.  Church was full, 127 there.
Comment:   Movie at the church:  "The Tony Fontane Story" is a dramatization of the life of teen singing idol, recording star and television personality Tony Fontane. It chronicles his rise to stardom, his splashy Hollywood lifestyle and his marriage to glamorous film actress Kerry Vaughn. The film focuses on the 1957 auto accident that nearly killed him and, consequently, resulted in his conversion to Christianity and abandonment of his popular career for one as a gospel singer."

Wednesday, Fair and nice.  I ironed nearly all day and still didn't get it done.  Picked some strawberries, the last.  David home around noon.  I went to  Scut??...after Clifton at nite, waited for 2 hours and he didn't come.  He and Alton worked overtime.  Alton brought him home.  Girls went to Albany with Laverne's after Wayne.  LaVerne's here for 15 minutes at 7 pm.

Comment:  Dowitch was the music teacher at school so it must have been some sort of audition....Carol, Wayne and Sue at the World's Fair the prior year...they must have sounded pretty good.....

Comment:  Big crowd for the picnic........
You're always young in your mind it is said, No matter the face in the mirror, That you see with surprise then say to yourself, "What is that old man doing here?"
