Tuesday, 31 July, 1962, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Thunder showers early am, cloudy.  I washed.  Marilyn, Mary and kids here in am.  Carol went home with them.  Doug hit LeRoy's cow with Gerald's car.
Comment:  I'd bought an Oldsmobile for $35.  It ran good and I was going to paint it up and sell it.  I'd finished the primer and Doug was using it.  Not sure it was licensed.  The impact wrecked the hood and I ended up junking it in the woods.  Doug was not hurt.....shit happens.....hitting cows was not uncommon.  I've hit several and once one of our own....this pix is very close to what I saw when I hit one of Dad's cows with his car...cow was ok, little damage to car.....our cow was white....

Nice day.   I picked beans in am.  Madelyn and Mrs. Bohlen and I went to mountain after huckleberries, had 5 pints.  Donna and Amy rode horse up.
Comment:  Madelyn was neighbor Madelyn Blakesley and Mrs.  Bohlen lived on Bohlen Road about 2 miles away...I remember Dad and I helping Mr. Bohlen butcher a heifer and some pigs one wet cold autumn day.  I put the heifer down with a .22 rifle shot between her eyes.  The pigs were small so we did not have to shoot or stun them, just slit their throats....a 1962 pix of a clam bake on Hubbard Hill...can you name the people...

Cloudy, cold, 42.  Ina Belle left in am for Earl's.  Girls and I went to camp at night.
Comment:  Earl's was about three miles away...hmmm..."Winter is coming".....Comment From Susan: Mom had two foster girls at this time, for a short while: Maxine Maxwell and Marjorie Coop, or Croop… the girls were cousins.  Sweet little things, around 7 and 8 years old.  Marjorie had appendicitis while with us.  She complained of a pain in her side for a few days – but nothing severe – come to find out it was appendicitis.  She was a tough little girl.  They both were from around Middleburgh way (SchoharieCounty).  The girls were there only a few months through the summer as I recall.  Dad got to drinking, and Mom, reluctantly, thought it was better no to keep the girls.  I have often thought of those little girls – how they ended up. Mom saw Marjorie several years later around Middleburgh, and spoke to her then.

Wednesday, 18 July 1962, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Cloudy and rainy.  I washed.  The worst day this week but the clothes dried.  Hard shower at about 4pm.  Clifton and I went to Dr. Palen at night.  Marilyn and kids were here and three girls from Roxbury were here for supper.
Comment:  Doc Palen was the go-to doctor in Margaretville for most of the family after Uncle Merel had been his patient and lauded him.  Not sure why they are visiting him but probably Mom's headaches.  When I was 16, he took my appendix out and left at least a 7-inch scar like a piece of rope and it took about a year for me to recover.  For a long time even into adulthood,  the scar would cramp up whenever I tried to raise my right leg.  I also could not straighten up for months after the operation.   Me, when I was cute, what happened?
