Wednesday, 31 August, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Nice day, hot and humid, upper 70's or more.  I helped paper and paint at parsonage.  Wayne, Laura, Michelle brought Susan home and were here for supper.  Gerald and Mary Ann came 8 pm.  Clifton home late.  Heard that Myrtle Wright was in Cobleskill Hospital with heart attack and G. B. at Schoharie jail.
Comment:  Myrtle Wright was my 6th grade teacher and had to suffer through the start of my slide into incorrigible adolescence and the subsequent suspensions and barely passing grades.  I graduated last in my class of 15 in 1956 and only did that with the help of my Ag teacher through the Ag regents.  Not sure who GB is, might be George Bailey but that certainly seems out of character.....view of South Mountain from the Elmer Hubbard house porch.....probably the forties......

Comment:  Unknown to all of us at the time was that Uncle Earl had less than two years to live....he died May 4, 1968......here is my song tribute to him from the Hubbard Music Mountain:  Hubbard Music Mountain: Uncle Earl Born August 1, 1910, Died May 4, 1968

Nice day, upper 60's and 70's.  Girls and I went to Grand Gorge in am, after feed.  Met Mary and David, he was home from 2 weeks at Camp Drum.  I stopped at parsonage on way back to get room ready for Sunday.  David and Mary here for dinner  David helped with hay in pm.  Larry Scutt was here back from two years in Vietnam.
Comment:  Never knew Larry was in Vietnam but was he ever:  See links to his heroism below.  That was a bad time to be there....and the American public was turning against the war...bet he had some stories to tell..What an amazingly horrible and wasteful event in our history.....

Thursday, 25 August, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Partly cloudy, cool, 60's.  Carol went to Debbie's and out at night.  Sue and I went to the fair and took Mother.  There about two hours, did the grocery shopping.  I went to prayer meeting at nite.  Mr. & Mrs. Thomas were there.  I wrote to Marilyn in am.
Comment:  The Cobleskill Sunshine Fair was a big deal and all the family went just about every year...my life long souvenir of the fair, the tattoo is now 65 years old, got it at 15 when only sailors or hoods had them.  $2.50 from a drunken tattoo artist.  Bobby Pickett and Paul Humphrey joined me, ...pix taken in a mirror, supposed to read GEH..my parents were not pleased.

Tuesday, 23 August, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Rainy and cloudy in mn and.  Very humid, clearing about 3 pm.  I ironed, finished dress Roberta gave me.  Roberta, John and Deane, Shawn, Colleen and Jones girls here in pm.  I cut their hair.  Carol called from Oneonta, she had a letter from Marilyn. We went to Wayne's at night, LaVerne's went too.
Comment:  Again, it is striking how socially active Mom and the girls were back then.  Something going on almost every day.  Carol must be staying in Oneonta for some reason if she got a letter from Marilyn there.  She went to college for a time somewhere but I don't remember where or when...Susan?? The whole married family at about that time......David & Mary, Doug & Ellen, Wayne & Laura, Gerald & Mary Ann, LaVerne & Roberta, Marilyn & Jim.....pretty good times, it seemed anyway...

Susan Ciacci So, Carol had a friend she met at the Baptist camp on Ferris Hill, Joyce Knapp. Carol often visited there for a week or so. I don't remember her ever being in Oneonta for an extended period of time. She went to college at Seneca Falls, or Niagara, out where you lived at the time Jerry.

Saturday, 20 August, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Nice day, clear, beautiful.  Clifton cut the field in back of the house but had no one to help him get it in.  Doug didn't come home and David was at Camp Drum.  Carol went out with Dick Oakely at night.  We went to LaVerne's and rode over to Summit Camp and called on Mother and Norm a few minutes at night.
Comment:  Hmmm..Doug not coming home was worth an underscore....hay must be getting very ripe, probably should have been cut a month ago.....the field that he cut behind the house...about twenty acres...view this year from Jeffery...

Thursday 18 August 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Nice day.  Carol and I took Sue over to Melody's about noon and stopped and had a visit with Mrs. Mayo, then we put up new shades and curtains in Church Hall.  I went to prayer meeting and Madelyn, Evelyn, Joyce and I went to Marion's to plan an open house for Thomases. Had a letter from Marilyn.
Comment:  Again, lots of church business.....The Bailey family 1956..they lived on the backside of Hubbard Hill in Broom Center.  Evelyn on crutches, don't remember what happened...that was the year I graduated from Gilboa Central...63 years ago....these folks were neighbors, friends, and cousins to my family...Joyce was a year behind me in school and my Dad always wanted me to take her out but I never did.....

Clifton started work at Cairo again but didn't work because of rain.  We went to Albany to Armory Garage to have steering fixed on car.  The girls bought some school clothes.
Comment:  It seemed like there was always something going wrong with the steering on our cars, out of line, tires unbalanced...all sorts of problems...must have been the roads and the older technology.....Elise and the tombstone of her great, great, great grandparents on my father's mother's side.....

Comment:  One brother goes on duty, the other on weekend leave.....that First Army big red and black "A" was on the shoulders of LaVerne, me and David....mine changed to the Sixth Army's six-pointed star when I went to the language school in Monterey then to the Tori patch when I went to Okinawa...

Saturday 6 August, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Saturday 6 August 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Nice day, 80, hot.  Doug, David, and Dad worked at the hay.  I baked in the am and finished the chair.  Wrote to Gerald and Mary Ann and had a letter from Marilyn and map and a card.  Priscilla Wickert died, killed in a car accident.
Comment:  Priscilla was the daughter of Fred Wickert, my teacher of Agriculture at GHS.  I was put in the "shop" class in my freshman year mostly because the classes were held all afternoon in the basement of the school and kept me far away from the regular student body and made me less trouble.  It also made me a member of the Future Farmers Of America, a career I really had no intentions of pursuing after being brought up on a dairy farm...."When you're brought up on a dairy farm, life's easy after that".....

Cloudy, about 70.  I finished painting outside foundation in am and worked on patch work chair in pm. Had rain in pm at night.
Comment:  Wow, no visitors or comments about the kids...another name for Hubbard Hill was Doc Leonard Mountain.  This is a view from Stewart Mace's farm and was in Clyda Belle Bailey Mace's "Honey In The Horn" book about times on the Mace Farm in Mackey's Corners.....In the late 1800's and early 1900's, Doc Leonard had a large farm and house just east of the Hubbard Hill summit.  As a kid, I remember the house and some outbuildings in a falling down condition.....

You're always young in your mind it is said, No matter the face in the mirror, That you see with surprise then say to yourself, "What is that old man doing here?"
