Rainy and much cooler.  Doug called 7 am to meet him in Kingston at 1030 am. Louvilla went with me, home at noon.  Girls and I went to church at nite.  Dr. Lowe was there.  Heavy rains for 3 pm to about 730 pm, thunder showers.
Comment:  Weekend pass for Doug....my birthday today, here I am 85 years ago, the last of the family born outside a hospital.....this may be the house where I was born in Carlisle, NY, where my grandmother Bessie and husband Norm were working on a farm......

Wednesday, September 22, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Wednesday, September 22, 1965
Hot, sunny, humid, 82.  I cleaned and washed windows in am and went to Louvilla's to help her and Janet plan shower for Mrs. Swehla.  We went to LaVerne's at nite and they were gone.
Comment:  Not sure who Mrs. Swehla is but she is probably having a baby and is a member of the Baptist Church.  Janet must be Janet Kinglsey, Louvilla's oldest daughter....view to Mt. Utsayantha, highest mountain to the right...

Tuesday, September 21, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Tuesday, September 21, 1965
Hot, humid, sunny, 80's.  I finished relish in am and picked three bushels of corn and put it in the freezer.  Wrote to Gerald and Mary Ann.  Bea Huper here in am for me to join "Home Demonstration".
Comment:  "Home Demonstration" was a federal and state agricultural extension service that provided farm families with information about growing and preserving food and also many aspect of home economics,  ie. mattress making.  4H was the kid's  program.
It was started in 1914 by the Smith Lever Act.  This club was probably sourced out of Cobleskill Agricultural And Technical Institute. (Where btw, Mary Ann and I got our Associates in Applied Science: Business degrees.)  With , Mom would have been a great resource for the organization as demonstrated by her the recent cucumber and corn harvesting.

Monday, September 20, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Monday, September 20, 1965
Sunny, hot and humid.  I washed and started relish.  Doug was home, he went to Duanesburg in pm.  Girls and I took Doug to Kingston at nite.  Men worked late.
Comment:  The relish is from all the cucumbers she picked the last couple of days.
I think David and Dad are working on the same job....48 years later to the day from this post, the view from the Hubbard Hill House at 640 am from Jeffery Hubbard:  Note the fog in the Grand Gorge Valley to the left....

Sunday, September 19, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Sunday, September 19, 1965
Hot, humid, sunny, 80 degrees.  Girls and I went to church with Mary Ann.  After dinner, we went to see falls on Canadian side.  Such a mob of people!  Mary Ann had studying to do and didn't go.  It was very nice.  Started for home at 4 pm, arrived 10 pm.
Comment:  Mary Ann was a business instructor at Niagara County Community College just out of college and was probably trying to stay ahead of her students.....the Canadian falls really are an awe inspiring sight much like looking at the Grand Canyon....on the Canadian side it is much like a public  park while the American side is a mess of schlocky commercial shit from one end to the other...

Saturday, September 18, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Saturday, September 18, 1965
Cloudy, warmer.  Clifton and David went to work but didn't stay because too wet. Clifton called 8:30 about going to Niagara Falls.  We left here 10 am and got there 3:30 pm.  Girls went too.  We all went to see the falls on American side at nite.  Girls stayed with Gerald and Mary Ann.  Clifton and I had a room at a motel.
Comment:  Mom and Dad would always want to visit us very quickly after we moved to a new location so they could "picture" us.  This trip is less than a month after we got married.  We lived in Niagara Falls and I worked at the Ford Buffalo Stamping Plant for a couple of years before oldest son David was born..here they are in front of the Peter Pan Apartments looking at some pictures of their trip.....

Thursday, September 16, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Thursday, September 16, 1965
Cloudy most all day, some sun around noon, cool 60 degrees.  Tracy and Louvilla went with me to Grand Gorge after pig feed in am.  I had sick headache.  Wayne and Laura here 3:30 pm.  Wayne bought banjo and gave me $20 to send to Marilyn.  Sue and I went to prayer meeting at nite.
Comment:  Just realized why they had to go after pig feed so often.  They did not have enough money to buy enough to feed the pigs for several weeks.  I forget how strapped for money they often were, living hand to mouth almost all the time...here is how the old barn looked from the front porch....

Wednesday, September 15, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Cloud with little rain and very overcast, 60 degrees.  I washed and worked on Sue's dress and did some mending.  Sue went to parsonage at night to help Young People paint a little.  Wayne home at night.
Comment:   Wayne must be working pretty hard running a mail truck for LaVerne...here he is in 1954, from Marilyn's albums.....

Cloudy and foggy in the am becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon.  I wrote to Marilyn and finished ironing and cut out a dress for Sue.  Myrtie down in the the am to ask about a dress she was making.
Comment:  Guess Mom was the go-to seamstress if the area....Here are a bunch of folks who were friends their whole lives.....can't remember who the lady is on the left...in the diaries of Ethel Haskin, she mentions some sort of interactions among these folks just about every day.....
From Left:  Unknown, Gene Halleck, Maude Haskin, Josh Haskin, Evelyn Haskin
Leonard Haskin, Frances Hubbard, Clifton Hubbard

David's birthday.  Cloudy, heavy rains in am.  I ironed nearly all day.

Sunday, September 12, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Sunday, September 12, 1965
Cloudy, cool, rain in am.  Girls and I went to church and Sunday School, at nite too.  Mother called from Middleburgh.  No one here all day.  Gerald and Mary Ann called in pm.

Saturday, September 11, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Saturday, September 11, 1965
Cloudy and cooler becoming warmer and fair in pm.  Clifton had to work.  Doug went with Wayne in am and girls and I picked him up at LaVerne's.  Sue and I went to Grand Gorge and did shopping.
Comment:  An uneventful 9.11 unlike years 2000 and 2001.  In 2000, I was hit by a car while on my bicycle and spent the next 21 days in the hospital and of course, one year later, the terrorist attack.  On that day, I was watching the events unfold in the Madison YMCA on an exercise bike, still in a leg cast from subsequent operations.  My rehab nurse who I had not seen for about a year was driving by the Y, became scared and came in to be around people, saw me, and we watched the second tower come down together.  Here is the finest song I know honoring the first responders:  And a side note: September 11, 2017, I was in hospital recovering from a triple by-pass op, and this year 2023, I tested positive for COVID-19.

Friday, September 10, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Friday, September 10, 1965
Doug's birthday.  Sunny, windy, hot, 80.  I washed in am, picked corn and put 12 quarts in the freezer.  Had letter from Marilyn.  Doug came home at night, late at 3:30 Saturday am and went on mail route with Wayne.
Comment:  Another busy day.  Here is Doug and David on the hill probably late forties. The 1934 Ford in the right background was wrecked when it was on the hill in front of the house without a brake on and the snow and ice melted underneath the tires and it rolled done the hill across a hay lot and hit a tree.  It might have happened right around the time this picture was taken.  In the upper right, you can see the un-melted snow along a fence line Happy Birthday Doug...

Thursday, September 9, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaires

Thursday, September 9, 1965
Partly cloudy in am, becoming cloudy in pm, cool, 60.  I had Missionary Meeting here, 15 of us and 3 children.  I didn't go to prayer meeting at night, too tired and didn't feel good.  Watched Billy Graham.
Comment:  Kinda striking how much religious activities permeated Mom's life....

Wednesday, September 8, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Wednesday, September 8, 1965
Warm, party cloudy.  Girls had a half day of school.  I cleaned and baked for Missionary Meeting.  Finished dress for Carol at nite.
Comment:   The "Girls" , Susan and Carol, with Marna, Marilyn's oldest....Elise, Craig's daughter, looks a lot like Susan....

Tuesday, September 7, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Tuesday, September 7, 1965
The first day of school.  Beautiful day, warm, mostly 80 degrees.  I washed in am, picked cucs, made pickles and cleaned wood house.  Girls went to school at noon.  Had letter from Marilyn.
Comment:  Another busy day...Carol and Susan on a  first day of school a long time ago...notice the dog in the upper right..I think that's our first dog, Prince, who fell out of the tower and broke his left rear leg and hip.....he was given to us by an old woman who had about 6 puppies, but recommend this one because of the wide space between his ears...she said this was a sign of greater intelligence...seems like her name was Mrs. Newkirk and lived over on Stone Store Road around the old Haskin homestead.  She was all crippled up and could barely walk.....

Monday, September 6, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Labor Day, Jim's birthday.  Nice day, warm 76 degrees.  LaVerne, Roberta, John, Earl and Laura here for dinner.  They all left soon after.  Sue went with LaVerne and Carol went with Wayne and Laura for a ride.  I sewed for Carol.
Comment:  Marilyn's husband, Jim Harris's birthday....lots of guests, all eat and run, hmmmm..here is Marilyn and Jim in early married life...they met in the Marine Corp, note the shined shoes...Semper Fi....

Fair in am, cloudy in pm, quite warm, sixties.  Girls and I went to church and Sunday School.  Laura here for dinner.  Gerald called in pm and we talked to Mary Ann too.  Her folks went there for the weekend.
Comment:   We had quite a few visitors shortly after we were married on 8.21.   We lived in Niagara Falls, about four hours away from both our families.  We became unofficial guides to one of  America's most famous tourist spot.  Here is Mary Ann and her family probably about the time we were married:

Saturday, September 4,1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Saturday, September 4, 1965
Lovely day.  We went to Middleburgh in am to have car serviced and to Cobleskill in pm for shopping.  Drove over to Rudy's but no one home.  Gone to Milliard Ruso's wedding.  Cut our Carol's dress and started it.
Comment:  Not sure who Milliard is.....the older Hubbard kids, probably about 1947 or so, Gerald, 8, Douglas, 4, David, 2, Marilyn, 11, and LaVerne 14..all ages approximate, cute bunch of kids...what happened?  Only me and David are alive.....thanks Susan for the pix..From Randy Blaksley:

Millard Ruso was the son of Neta and Ronald. Neta is my father’s sister.

Comment:  Not much going on...LaVerne and his boys....on the hill.....

You're always young in your mind it is said, No matter the face in the mirror, That you see with surprise then say to yourself, "What is that old man doing here?"
