April 4, 1963 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

April 4, 1963
Thursday, partly cloudy in am, 45 and turning colder. In pm, dreadful wind and snow squalls, 16. Ceiling paper came in and I did most of the dining room. Did mending in am. Billie called.
Comment:  I remember Mom and the Hubbard aunt's "papering" the house while I ran around as a very little boy playing with the remnants of the paper and crawling around underneath the "paper boards", large flat surfaces they used to apply the adhesives to the backside of the paper.  Until I tried it, I really did not understand how much skill and effort it took to "paper" especially the ceilings.  Mom casually mentions she papered most of the dining room ceiling as if it was nothing and maybe to her it was.  If you google "papering a ceiling" the results mostly show it was a two-person job.  I remember Mom doing it by herself........and she also "did the mending" before she "papered".......Here is a picture of the dining room with a bunch of picture albums on the table.  One of our pastimes when we visited was to pore through the many albums and reminisce....
You're always young in your mind it is said, No matter the face in the mirror, That you see with surprise then say to yourself, "What is that old man doing here?"
