Friday, December 27 1963 The Frances Hubbard Diaries


December 27 1963
Friday, lovely day, the warmest so far, hot in the sun.  Men cleaned up some of the tumble weed and burned it.  Marilyn, kids, Wayne and the rest of us went to Julian and Inspiration Point in pm.  I did some ironing in am.  Marilyn brought over clothes to hang up.  Received New Testament from Mrs. Mayo.
Comment: Dad was a fire warden of some sort when in Gilboa so he knew how to do a controlled burn. Us kids used to help when we burned some meadows to get rid of weeds and unwanted plants. The primary control tool was small back fires started on the edges of the burn. We also had rakes, shovels and brooms to knock out any errant flames. Sounds like the family is really enjoying the leisure time. Mrs. Mayo was the parson's wife at the Flat Creek Baptist Church. Not sure of the occasions for the New Testament, Mom must have had several.......This is what Dad might have been dealing with:
