Tuesday, 25 October, 1966, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Beautiful day, same as Monday, 63.  I finished cleaning wood house and cleaned house all through, had letters from Gerald and Mary Ann.  David left 4am for Poughkeepsie for Timberland.  Mrs. Thomas here at night for evening, we played 42.  Madelyn's brother, Asa Allen died.
Comment:  I never knew any of Madelyn Blakesley's family...Mom and the family loved to play 42..it was really Texas 42 and interestingly it was started by two Baptist brothers who were forbidden to play cards..."About 120 years ago, two boys from Trapps Springs (now Garner) were caught in a forbidden pastime: playing cards. Their parents burned the offending deck and whipped the disobedient youngsters, but this led William Thomas and Walter Earl to find a loophole in the rules. “In those days Baptists considered card-playing to be the devil’s work,” says Dennis Roberson, the Fort Worth author ofWinning 42: Strategy & Lore of the National Game of Texas . “But dominoes, for some reason, weren’t sinful.” So the enterprising boys replaced the cards with dominoes, invented a new game similar in style to bridge and spades, and dubbed it 42. Soon the game had scooted across Texas like an unhampered tumbleweed."  and so I now know why it was not "sinful" for a devout Baptist to play 42...."Texas Monthly May 2008.

Comment:  Janet was the daughter of Louvilla Kingsley, Mom's good friend and neighbor....."The Amplified Bible is a translation that, by using synonyms and definitions, both explains and expands the meaning of words in the text by placing amplification in parentheses and brackets and after key words or phrases. This unique system of translation allows the reader to more completely grasp the meaning of the words as they were understood in the original languages. Through multiple expressions, fuller and more revealing appreciation is given to the divine message as the original text legitimately permits."  Wikipedia.....now you know....

Lovely day in the 70's.  Girls and I went to Church and Sunday School and Carol, Clifton and I went to 50th anniversary for Elton Cross and on down Palenville Mountain.  Girls and I took Doug to Kingston at night.  David had National Guard.
Comment:  Boy, they sure put some miles on those cars......Palenville is the fictional home of Rip van Winkle and an art center.....Palenville was an important center of the Hudson River school of the 19th century. Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, and other notable painters stayed and worked in Palenville during the height of the movement. The famous painting Kindred Spirits depicts Cole and William Cullen Bryant nearKaaterskill Falls, just uphill from the town. Nice day, cool and windy, 50's.  I did a big wash and did a crate of cauliflower.  David worked for Earl and went to National Guard at night.
Comment:  I guess she canned a crate of cauliflower.  LaVerne used to haul cauliflower from the Imer Conroe farm next to where the Rendezvous "beer joint", (as my mother would say) used to be which was run by Imer's son and wife for a long time in the 50's and 60's.  He took it to the NY markets and I went with him several times on some hair raising trips down and up Palenville Mountain.  Imer was an alcoholic and I remember him sitting in a booth at the Rendezvous briefing LaVerne and I on a trip and also telling us how sick the drugs used to make him when he was in rehab..sounded like tough duty.....we also hauled brussel sprouts by the truckload.....

Comment:  Rather extensive weather report, getting a  little brisk on the Hill.....and just to show that brutality, barbarity and viciousness is not restricted to our times and non-western cultures, on this day in 1777....

Redcoats kill sleeping Americans in Paoli Massacre...stabbing or setting fire to those that tried to surrender:

.On the evening of September 20, 1777, near Paoli, Pennsylvania, General Charles Grey and nearly 5,000 British soldiers launch a surprise attack on a small regiment of Patriot troops commanded by General Anthony Wayne in what becomes known as the Paoli Massacre. Not wanting to lose the element of surprise, Grey ordered his troops to empty their muskets and to use only bayonets or swords to attack the sleeping Americans under the cover of darkness.
With the help of a Loyalist spy who provided a secret password and led them to the camp, General Grey and the British launched the successful attack on the unsuspecting men of the Pennsylvania regiment, stabbing them to death as they slept. It was also alleged that the British soldiers took no prisoners during the attack, stabbing or setting fire to those who tried to surrender. Before it was over, nearly 200 Americans were killed or wounded. The Paoli Massacre became a rallying cry for the Americans against British atrocities for the rest of the Revolutionary War.

Comment:  Big job done......it was a big deal when the times were good enough for us to get a refrigerator and a chest freezer.  Before that, we had to can and cure all the meats and vegetables.  I remember helping Dad "cure" hams with salt water in large earthenware tubs that we placed in the cellar.  He put a large stone in the tub on top of the meat to keep it under the salt water before he put the top on the tub......this is very like our first freezer......
