Monday, October 18, 1965 The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Monday, October 18, 1965
Beautiful day, sunny, warm, 67 no wind.  Sue home, didn't feel good.  I washed, covered three windows with plastic, cracked nuts, picked up a few, all there was (from the butternut tree at the bottom of the hill). Had letter from Gerald and Mary Ann.  David started work for Carpenters at Gilboa.
Comment:  Butternuts were tough to crack.  I watched my Dad set them vertically on the bottom of an old flat iron and hit the tip with a hammer and it would split down the middle and the nut meats could be easily picked out.  A very smooth and yep, buttery taste..
