Friday, 20 April, 1962, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Cloudy, warm, 50, snow about gone.  Gerald was home.  David, Wayne and Gerald went to Cobleskill after Gerald's clothes and got a plug for the chainsaw in Middleburgh.  The pump didn't run so David took the motor off the Maytag and used it.  We got our new ironing board.  I did a big wash, the girls cleaned up the house. Clifton and Jim were both working.
Comment:  Busy day...Mom on her Grandmother's porch in Middleburgh maybe 1920 or so....

Thursday, 19 April, 1962, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Cloudy, chilly, in the thirties.  Marilyn cut my hair and gave me a permanent.  Clifton started work in Windham on roller for Green Island Construction Co. HB called Jim back to work.
Comment:  Getting back to work....

Betcha Jim is driving without a NY license and HB is risking it because either some driver didn't show up or he had to add another truck somewhere....Mom and her mother Bessie, dressed to the nines..Mom hated her hair like that...

Comment:  The Lee's and Clevelands lived in a clutch of cabins and one main house on the Bull Hill Road just past the Young farm.  They were one of the poorest families in the area...I don't seem to remember either of the them....how it was in 1962...

Tuesday 12 April, 1962, The Frances Hubbard Diaries

Tuesday 12 April 1962, The Frances Hubbard Diaries
Cloudy 40.  It started to snow about 3 pm.  Marilyn, Jim, and the kids went to Mother's for dinner.  Clifton went to court.  I went to Missionary Meeting at church, election of officers. H.B. Moore called for Jim to come to work at 5 pm.  He went.  Marilyn still didn't feel good and  Patty sick too.
Comment:  H.B. Moore was good employment for the family.  LaVerne, I, now Jim, and later David all drove truck for him.  He had concrete batch trucks, he hauled salt for the winter roads, clinker for the cement plants.  He must have had a hundred trucks of various makes and years.  I drove a brand new batch truck on Andrews Air Force Base, and 12 year old junkers batching on I 84 going north out of Albany.  In '62, both Jim and I hauled clinker from Cobleskill to,  I think, The Hudson Valley Cement Factory....in 1957 Ford Cabovers....and here one is....

Comment:  It's remarkable how social the family was at that time...always going somewhere, lot's of callers and drop-in supper and dinner guests...very connected to the community, friends and family.... Floyd and Anna were Rudy Blakesley's parents and Aunt Winnie's in-laws......Uncle Rudy & Aunt Winnie on the steps of Grandpa Elmer's farm....

Comment:  I think I was hauling wholesale milk out of Prospect Dairies in Stamford for Joe Gallo.  I delivered crated milk to about six or so creameries along the east side of the Hudson down route 9 to Poughkeepsie, Wappingers Fall,  Fishkill and Peekskill.  Ten to 12 hours and I  got $25  a trip.  Drove a 1959 Ford F900 tractor with 40' reefer...had to handle every damn carton and crate....not bad money for back then..would be about $263 per day today....my truck was green.....

Bright, clear, cold, 15.  Clifton and David went to Windham and Albany.  I finished my dress.  Sue was home with a stiff neck and headache.
Comment:  Clear and cold bring back the memories of how beautiful it was in those mountains....from Visions Of Schoharie County:
You're always young in your mind it is said, No matter the face in the mirror, That you see with surprise then say to yourself, "What is that old man doing here?"
